List of questions EA82t
what different turbos can i fit to this motor (how much work would it take to put a td04 on ?
car has a 3" lift what speedo cable do i need for it to be able to reach (it is manual) i beleive i want the ea81 auto speedo cable.
what is the turbo on the ea82t
what is the inlet body dia and turbo outlet dia? (ill look myself in daylight is no one knows)
do i know what i am doing no... my mate has a fair bit of experience with turbo motors and we are going to be playing around to find a nice setup.

cheeers... will rip it out of my MY
i understand what is going on ... i just will not do it with out his help. we will be installing an rs Waic and are toying with the idea of a bigger turbo... i remember reading come where that the subaru wont cope with more than 15psi.
i understand carby and the old subaru but the fuel injection and after market ecu and turbo and and and... is just a little bit over the top of my head but i sit here every night and read and read and take in as much as possable... i understand most of it and what is does and i could do it but when i have a mate with good experience i will happily learn and let him watch hehe..
i have been spending and hour every night on the car... i am getting ancy waiting to drive it... and with the thought of some good power figures i can see my smile continueing to grow.
i will be happy with 115kw atw the more the better..

schultzie, once I sort some tune probs I have with the stock set up on mine, I will be going with a Forester XT turbo upgrade. I chose this turbo as it sits pretty close to the rev range of the stock turbo and will add more mid range boost for added torque and more top end - better for driveability and 4WDing.
If you go bigger or top end power like WRX turbos, you have added lag and a motor that doesnt like high boost. Becareful here too, stock ECU wont be in the ball park for fuel mapping. (Just go EJ20G for this, it will be easier)
I will still need to add a IC to mine, need to modify mounting, inlet, exhaust flanges to suit etc, then change the air cleaner to a pod. Then see where the tune sits, it may need more fuel etc. I will keep the boost sain, as I dont intend crashing an burning this engine with stupidity.

OK my 2c and as you will notice it does not always follow everyone else ideas. My 1st question is WHY??? Whats wrong with the O/E and what do you want to achieve by changing turbos?
That being said (and depending on the answers supplied) I would just be leaving the engine/turbo standard. They work well together, the lag is not that bad (and as Subanator stated lag will get worse with larger turbo) you will alter things like when the boost comes on, mid range and top end pull etc. Sure go with the IC and adjustable boost BOV etc however leave the turbo as is. Look forward to see what you do (not put the boaring 1 back in his box).

ok what is the actualy forrester turbo like... better or worrse than the stock one. will most likely leave the turbo stock, i have noticed that as the revs do come up it definatly comes off boost quite quickly. fuel maps wont be an issue (wolf 3d v4).
im guessing Waic and how about removing ac and the fan (replace with big thermo???) and power steering pump belts that would give it a bit more go...
has any one done this?
have got an 120amp hour altanator which will be retro fitted (off and x series falcon) and a big battery....
on the fan front i think it might be better to leave it all as per normal because if the thermo gets wet then im fucked... i dunno any ideas
i have some pics here http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/justintwo/my_photos
in the L-series section
will be more as the car comes togethor...

Not sure what you're intending doing with the car, but if you want to go offroading it's probably better to stick with a smaller turbo (like the stock one) so that you've got at least some boost available at lower revs. The larger turbo will give better top end, but may leave you struggling on those rough steep hill climbs.
The blades on a thermo fan can get flexed forward into the radiator if you're doing a water crossing and get water into the fans, however you can fit an isolating switch to disable the fans and ensure they don't come on during a crossing. As well as saving you power the thermo's will probably be alot more effective for cooling than the stock setup.

yeah i knew about pulling the blades in to it... probably a ,much of a much ness but i guess if something goe wron electrically the car aint going any where regardless.
yeah little bit of offroading.... was hoping for a turbo that would stil come on boost as guick but hold on a bit longer and mayb produce a bit more thatn 15psi, still good i know but a thought none the less
stock turbo setup it is...

For offroad work using thermos fans isnt a bad idea as you can set them up to be switchable for water crossing and if you fit an aftermarket thermo probe you can set the turn on point to what you want, say if you fit a lower temp thermostat. As for the turbo unless you really want to changing the to a later model turbo wont reap you lots of more noticable power unless your current turbo is sad or dieing.
In my RX i have a water to air IC from an RS fitted which i would recomend for offroad as they still will work at low speed unlike and air to air. I also am running 17psi boost from the original turbo which is being replaced by a VF8 very soon (its a road toy not an everday driver) Headgaskets are monotorque and have no problem keeping them sealed. For offroad use keep the turbo small and run some extra boost and it will be a good alrounder

To put some perspective to answer the above in my case:Jaffa wrote:OK my 2c and as you will notice it does not always follow everyone else ideas. My 1st question is WHY??? Whats wrong with the O/E and what do you want to achieve by changing turbos?
My dump pipe needs rework, the front pipe leaks. If I make up new turbo flanges for new pipes - I may as well make them up for an improved flow shape and size for the new pipes. This may as well be fitted to then a better turbo for all this effort, and one that has more advanced design for larger power spread, as 15 years is a long time between development.
To counter the inlet, a free flowing air tract via a pod and possibly a cold air induction box was always in the plan. The O/E air box is restrictive and poor design. A WAIC is my intention as mentioned by SWK. I want no scoop and sleeper approach to draw no attention, and no loud exhaust, already a good free flowing muffler.
I think this will be an effective change, without over stressing anything major. I still could encounter the unknown hiccup, but I am up for it.
I see the hand-me-down Subie family parts as easy pickings too, as there are many who upgrade WRX and Foresters and flog off low km parts. This keeps costs down too. Hope you can see my reasoning.
Cheers Roger.

The WRX Turbo,.. the TD04 has been fitted to a few RX turbos in the US
This is a post about the flow characteristics of the TD04 compared to the RHB5 http://www.ultimatesubaru.net/forum/sho ... hp?t=22146
