I have mostly reused my factory orange O ring - more a double O ring in a flat washer sort of seal. Packed with a little extra silicone :). Order one in from dealer, sit down before price given to you. Were about 20 bucks 18 years ago !

has anyone seen the utube video of a brumby (brat) clutch replacement ? The owner just separated the gearbox from the engine with the transmission resting on a jack. There seemed to be plenty of room to replace the clutch with the engine, drive shafts etc in place. The gearbox cross member was removed and the tailshaft disconnected.

I was surprised the gearbox would move so far with the driveshafts in place.

And what are the specs for the clutch ?splines? diameter input shaft size?

Yeah I think I've seen that clip. Pretty impressive.

Regarding that O-ring, I have been informed by Subaru that the part is no longer available so I'll just have to hope mine's OK.

Still not cleared a space in the calendar for this yet, (maybe it's fear stopping me!) will keep you posted.

I haven't had that O-ring in either of my cars for the last 2 times I've swapped engines, no ill effects so far.

Not sure why it's even in there in the manual.

Greedy bugger FROG, you gonna hoard them ? Can't say I have seen them on EA82, so specific to manual EA81's ?

Not hoarding Jonno , just keeping the last few within the Ausubaru family :)
and yes only EA81

Is this the smaller orange O ring on the back of the crank?

I remember someone telling me not to touch that I ring and leave it as is.

So that's what I did and no leaks ;)

Still hoping to do this at some point. Long story short - 'replacement' for the Brumby (bigger family, extra seats etc.) is taking longer to hit the road than I expected.

Anyway, I picked up a flywheel at U-Pull-It which I'm hoping to clean up to swap with mine to save a bit of downtime. Are there any differences in these MY flywheels I should be aware of or should this one be OK? It came from an MY wagon.

Cheers

I think the flywheels should be the same, its just the clutches that come in different sizes from memory - I'd confirm that with someone who knows more than me though ... :/

Cheers, Bantum ...

Two different sized clutches means 2 different sized flywheels.

200mm and 225mm from this thread showthread.php?t=19328 and personal experience

Thanks for that. I guess I have a 50% chance of this one being right so I may as well get it ready to swap in.

What sort of sealant has anyone used on flywheel bolts? I think I've got some of that non-hardening aviation gasket goo from when I did my inlet manifold gaskets. Would this work ok?

I don't remember using a sealant on those bolts. But it's also been a while since I've worked in that area on the EA81 ;)

Getting closer now, just picked up Silverbullet's crane the other day (thanks again).
Just wondering if anyone has pics of where to attach the crane to the engine. Hopefully will make sense when I go to do it but, just incase, would be nice to know what to look for.

Thanks

There should be a steel lifting hook bolted at the front of the engine block, right above the crank pulley. There should also be a steel bracket on the bell housing that you can put a D shackle through.

Here's a (really!) old pic I found on my PC, hopefully you can see the hooks on this pic.

Got the engine out today and took the clutch out to order a new one. Should be here tomorrow - 225mm and 21 splines just for info.
Everything came apart ok, the trickiest bit was actually separating the engine from the transmission. Had to wiggle it about a fair bit to get it free from the studs. It was also a bit tight getting my trolley jack under the transmission with the crane in the way. At least it's out.
The surfaces of the clutch and flywheel are almost like chrome - no wonder it's been shuddering. Also, the flywheel I got from U-Pull-It seems to be the right size! Came up great after machining.
Now I just have to fight with the flywheel bolts and do the rear main seal before putting it all back together.

Got the engine back in today, went in ok apart from the last 50mm or so. Everything was lined up but I just couldn't seem to get the block to meet the transmission. Lots of jiggling and wiggling and pushing and pulling and swearing got it there eventually.
I also swapped the steering rack for a (hopefully) better one which took a bit of time so I haven't connected everything back up yet.
Already dreading the restart - always wonder if I've done something wrong or forgot something.....

Got everything back together and took the car round the block today. Didn't go far but i can still drive it and change gear so hopefully all will be good. Won't fully relax until I get a few more kms under my belt tho....
