Oils ain't Oils - EA81

I'm wondering about which oil is the best for use in an EA81. At the moment my engine has some oil in it but I have no idea what it is (synthetic / mineral / semi-synthetic / viscosity).
What would you use in an EA81 and why?
(serious replies only please)

Engine is 1989 model EA81, and has done 330,000km.
New waterpump went in today. It's got a couple of leaky engine seals which will be fixed sometime in August, but otherwise it's a reliable engine and still going strong.
I'm simply not sure what's the most appropriate oil for it.

You would be better running a mineral oil and perhaps try a seal rejuvinator addative until the engine seals are replaced.

Thanks for the suggestion, I hadn't thought of using an additive.
