I was wondering if its possible to convert an Ea82 which is 4wd (2wd, 4wd-hi, 4wd-lo) to rear wheel drive selectable or something, anyone done it, does it work, how can i do it.

take out front cvs(prolli leave outter cvs in hub) then put 4wd selector in 4wd. and off you go

what are you trying gain by this? besides maby been able to crank a small burnout?

yes this can be done, as breifly described by Fatz you only need to take out the front shafts, separate the outer cv joint and replace the outer half shaft to hold the hub together. select 4wd and away you go.

as to why, I hate front wheelers with a passion, my L wagon never handled so well, and was never as much fun to drive on the tight and twisties. but it still is no wrx.

A WORD OF WARNING, the gearbox is not designed to pass all power to the rear end. the diff may hold up, but the transfer case will not. it will break, its just a matter of when. it took my new ea82t a month to blow mine, but I got a year out of it before that with the stocker non turbo. And it wasn't during the full noise takeoffs, dirt drift rally action, or burnouts when it let go, but pulling away from home!!!! at least it was an easy recovery.

I still miss my rwd wagon, nothing takes the fun out of exiting a corner with the turbs spooled up more than spinning up an inside front wheel......

any option to replace the rear drive with a proper rwd diff, and the gearbox with a proper rwd gearbox (like, a gearbox designed for rwd use)? how bout that?

The FHI R series diffs as found in Subarus are a "proper" RWD diff (just look up the skirt of a Nissan 200SX or Skyline).

Problem is the gearbox. Yeah you can if you want but it kinda defeats the purpose of owning a Subaru - a Datto or a Corolla is far better set up for RWD in terms of chassis dynamics.

About the only way of making the L PT box stringer it to open it up and strengthen the centre lock setup but still as already stated they werent designed for RWD. As many of the gears in the later boxes are similar if not the same as nissan parts you may find an early nissan box will bolt up with minimal modification

there is a gearbox company out there producing output shafts for wrx's to replace the centre diff, to make a rwd rexy for the drifting mob. costs something like a grand from memory, so not a cheap option, but proof that with the right equipment, anything is possible.
