RX CV Cups for Full Time Box Problems

We are in the process of putting the Full Time Box in my L Series. I have already got turbo cups (25 spline). We were adapting my CVs but we have hit a snag. We have used the cups - and the inner parts (with the balls) of the RX cups but the spline towards the outers does not match to the existing standard driveshaft on the car. The inner part with the balls was a different size to my existing ones.
I was under the impression all that was needed to be done was to "change the cups". Is there more to it than this? Is it possible I have Vortex cups and they are different?

geoff i think you just use the cup from the rx with your existing balls ,cage and race from the original driveshaft.I say think cause thats how it was explained to me when using lib ones on l shafts and its how i'm going to do it.

Yes that is what I thought too - however the existing standard L Series cage and balls (is that what it is called?) are too small to go into the "RX" cup snugly.
Basically the "RX" cup and balls is bigger than my standard L Series.
When we tried using the "RX" Cup and Balls, we have a spline issue -:
Gearbox Stub ==> Cup ==> Cage and Balls ==> Problem Spline <== Outer CV shaft.
Sorry if I am being vague people - I am not clued on the correct terminolgy of CVs

RX run 19mm balls and the L runs 16mm. You need the entire RX shafts as the splines on the RX ar 25/25 to 25/30. The L ran 23/23 to 23/30. There is another way to go, but the RX shafts are the biggest and I think the best.

Whats the "other way" Cameron? I don't fancy forking out for a pair of entire shafts. This is just a standard EA82 with a Weber on it.
Thanks for your replies guys - if anyone else has any input it would be appreciated.

Cameron : I am guessing the 23/30 is the outer shaft? So the RX and the standard L share the same outer spline in that respect? Just want to make sure if I do purchase the two (L + R) RX shafts that it will go onto my L fine.
Chris : Thanks for the offer - I'll see how we go. You don't have a spare pair of RX shafts kicking around do you?

Are the L series RX auto ( OK GLAT ! ) and L Series RX manual inner joint (DOJ) cups the same in this respect ?

nope.rx auto is the standard L spline inner, but the cup and shaft are bigger.
i'm hoping the other way is to use lib inner cups on standard L shafts,i guess i'll find out in the next few days.

not yet. I may still need mind. they are available for sizing though.

then is it possible that a reco shaft has different size balls again from both and cause even more confusion in this task ?

Rumor has it - an MPFI model has the 25 splines on the gearbox end and the rest of the the shaft is the same. Am going to get a pair of shafts and see how that goes.
Thanks to Jeff for pointing me in the right direction.

Fang from memory I thought that the RX and MPFI cups were different – how do I know this? Well when I did the conversion I did not change the box (due to the lower ratio) and I could not keep/use the RX shafts as they were different.

Hmm well I will soon see. The shafts I have been given slotted onto an Australian RX Turbo box (25 spline) I have here okay. But at least I can take these buggers back.
No offence.. but I hope you are wrong Jaffa
(Did I give you a sticker for your console Jaffa with that stuff?)

The RX and MPFI cups are different in outer diametre. That doesn't matter though as the spline size where it goes on to the stub is the same. As the_postie has already said you can use Liberty inner cups straight on to your existing cv joints.
Hint 1: If you have already got the RX inners then it might pay to have a look at some 2wd front shafts.
Hint 2: Get some Liberty inners and put them on your existing cvs.
Beside all that I can get complete reco shafts for $140 each. Liberty, L series, MY, turbo, non-turbo, what ever. They come with 12 months warranty.

Thanks Brett. You certainly would have been cheaper (and closer to where the car is) - but I have got these ones now. They were $169 each. I was quoted $270ea by one mob!
I just want to get this beast moving. Oh what a "live and learn" experience. Thursday night is the night I hope it lives.
Incidentally, can you tell me which model Liberty I should use CV cups from? Be good to know for next time.
Thanks again all.

Any Liberty has the right size spline inside the cup. Which cup to use depends one what cvs you have at the time as 2wd, 4wd, turbo are all different sizes.
