AWD BOX

There are a few things you can look for
The gold vaccuum diaphragm -: Used to Lock the Centre Diff. Dont look for this alone - Single Range P/T 4WD boxes had this too
Count the splines on the front drive output - there should be 25 not 23. Does not necessarily means its AWD tho - 25 splines just means its an RX box. All L Series AWD boxes have 25 splines.

The definiatave way I told was by turning the input shaft. I selected the rod/levers in all positions - and the 3 output shafts always turned. If you have 25 splines and the diaphragm - then its AWD.
Shorty is correct - there should be no rod for selecting 4WD - but if its dual range there will be a rod for Hi/Lo Range selection. If it has a rod, it should only have 2 positions - not 3. 3 positions is for Part Time 4WD
I believe the external case is the same for AWD and Part Time 4WD.
Maybe someone else can hook you with numbers, etc

Easiest way is to look for the difflock - on the drivers side of the box near the mount bracket there is a lever that is actuated by the cable going to the vacuum diaphragm, if you have that lever it's an L series awd box.
Also, next to a part time box, the centre diff housing at the back is *clearly* bigger and different shaped.

If its a d/r awd box you still have the lever to select hi/low, it still goes through the box the same as the 4wd selector on the part time box, only instead of engaging 4wd (under the gold inspection plate) it just passes through.Shorty wrote:in the part time it will have a lever to select 4wd if no lever then u have awd
hehe and that is coming from a girl
Take Care

Correct me if I am wrong - but wouldnt a single range 4WD box have the same setup??MechaWagon wrote:Easiest way is to look for the difflock - on the drivers side of the box near the mount bracket there is a lever that is actuated by the cable going to the vacuum diaphragm, if you have that lever it's an L series awd box.

The EJ boxes will not directly bolt up to an EA8x engine, you'll need to use an adaptor plate, as well as modified CV and tail shafts.
If you're going to all that effort you might as well drop an EJ engine in there while you're at it, then you only need to modify the shafts.

What about the L-Series turbo automatics? I think the later ones came Aus-delivered AWD Automatic. I'm also thinking Vortex, but I'm not sure if any were from Australian dealers.Fang wrote:the Full Time 4WD box (AWD) was never sold in L Series in Australia.
I'm probably totally wrong though, just a thought.

Just to be a technical bastard, but the term Subaru used for the AWD L series boxes is "Full-Time 4wd".
I personally thin kwe should stick to that because it separates the mechanical centre diff boxes from the viscous EJ AWD type.
Weren't the 4wd Vortexes single range full-time 4wd?

EXACTLY RIGHT! - I was using that term coz it simplified things. Sounded like we were talking bout two different boxesJust to be a technical bastard, but the term Subaru used for the AWD L series boxes is "Full-Time 4wd".
