Reccomended oil?

heya all,

going to do an oil change soon.

just wondering what you EJ20T tech heads would reccomend for an oil?

I've purchased some Royal Purple 5W30 Synthetic, but I haven't heard anything about this particular oil.

Is this too thin of an oil? the little pimply 17 yo "expert" tried to sell me MOTUL oil (he was trying really hard... comission based??) but I bit the bullet, spent the $90, and bought the Royal Purple.

So, my question is, before I take the plunge with my EJ20R...
a) 5W30 an acceptable oil viscosity? I have read on other forums that most turbo'd EJ20 run mostly 10W40.
b) is royal purple good stuff?

to me, it looks alright.

had to travel a bit to get this oil. I was actually after some redline oil, (engine, not gearbox!) but alas, they didn't have any. settled for the royal purple between that and elf. (yes, I like exotic oils :D)

and before you ask, I'm using an original subaru oil filter ;)

thanks for your help

alex

my 1c, is thats its more important to change the oil regularly, than to use some ultimate quality oil..........or are you going to run the car for 1000km at the red line, like at Bathurst today?

Whos the manufacturer of the Royal Purple 5W30 Synthetic stuff?

I was more worried about the viscosity I had chosen.

Anyways, I just put it in, and it goes great. The oil's purple, too!! :p

Im not exactly certain of the viscosity used previously, but it seems the motor runs more freely. It also idles, and accelerates more smoothly.

I had another 1500kms left on the oil that I had until the 5000km service interval, but it looked so dirty and putrid... so I had to change it.

Previous owner did use Fuchs oil. I guess I won't be going back to that.

Most of us use 5/30 synthetic in our turbo engines.

next EJ20R n00b question:

how much oil does the EJ20TT hold?

4.5L? 4.8L? Because I've put in 4.8L, as reccomended by a friend with a GT wagon, which was OK on the dipstick (after fill up, after running the motor on idle). Took it out for a lap, came back, checked dipstick, and now is showing significantly over the full marker.

contemplating whether i should let some out...

Yes if the level is significantly over you should drain a small amount.
the correct level will be between 4.2 and 4.5 litres

Why is that?
