RX rear diff help pls!

Okay I've just done some more driving and more testing of this diff (see my other thread - just converted 3.7 RX diff ratio by putting it into my 4.111 open casing/ring gear).

I tested it to see if there was any wheel crab by driving at slow speed in very tight circles (nearly full lock on the steering). Occasionally, almost randomly there are some clunk noises accompanied by noticable small jerks through the driveline. This is mostly only when driving in tight circles, but I have also noticed it going slowly around a few corners.
I've just taken the diff back out of the car and popped the rear cover off to look inside. Everything looks totally normal...no loose bits of metal anywhere, no fresh metal exposed, all the teeth on the ring gear and pinion look perfect.

Please note,
I know in the guide it mentions about grinding a section of the casing away. I have not done this - the original LSD casing appears absolutely identical to the one it's in now. I couldn't see any difference between them and no sign of any goove needing to be ground out. Everything rotates freely inside without hitting anything. Even the same numbers are embossed on the outside of the casings.

Could this just be a symptom of the RX clutch pack sitting unused for nearly 1 year? Do I just need to drive it some more to bed it in?

**edit - Also, I've just been told of the huge importance of using special LSD diff oil - I havn't, could this cause a problem like this?

Give it a few days... my bet would be it will sort itself out.

**edit... i think u need LSD oil in it.

yeah LSD oil has a friction modifier in it. If you put standard gear oil in it then it should be very tight (like locked if in good condition). You can by the friction modifier in a little bottle and add some until you like how tight it is.

Dont let mud get in though .. i think thats what killed mine.

hm well it seems to be grabbing, mabey the standard oil is causing that (like locking it solid for a spit second at a time).
Otherwise when its not grabbing it doesn't have any wheel crab or chirping at all....no doubt the clutch isnt in perfect condition - its got over 260,000kms on it after all.
I'll buy some LSD oil tomorrow and give it another whirl.

Interesting what u said about the LSD oil Matt... what do others have to say about this... is there a good oil cocktail that will make it tighter and not damage it at all???

Well it's back in the car driving again. This time it's got Penrite LSD oil. Quite alot less clunks and jerks now, only very occasionally. Hopefully they will disappear completely with abit more driving.

Incidentily I just looked at the sticker on the back of the LSD casing and strangely enough it says "USE SUBARU LSD OIL ONLY"!

Yeah hopefully I'll get to try it offroad on Sunday. Seems very tight at the moment. With the back of the car jacked up it's quite hard to move the rear wheels in opposite directions.

Mine is showing the same symptoms, interesting on the oil. I will try an LSD specific one. Either way good to know these diffs are nice and tight.
