Q on half-shaft to gear box

L-series
The centre part of the half shaft where it mounts, is that inside some bearing or something?
so it would stay in position, whilst the rear part of the half-shaft + diff is removed - and still be drivable.
Just figuring out the best and laziest way to remove the rear diff temporarily, so I can drive in FWD only whilst I sort out CIG the rear diff
The centre half shaft looks easy to dismantle - 4 obvious bolts, but to remove the whole shaft, it dont look too obvious how it gets removed from the
rear of the gear box...?
Thanks

Off the top of my head the Tailshaft makes a seal against the gearbox, i.e the gearbox will leak all its oil out. MY/Brumby for sure not 100 percent on L .

Oh thanks Matt, damn, really? would it leak out in a rush ?
found my gregories manual - talks about "ensure shaft aperture is plugged", wonder what sort of plug i'm gonna need? might have to buy something..i've looked what i might have on hand to plug whatever size?
any suggestions out there?

Yeah it comes out in a rush, it is really quite surprising when your under the car, and even more surprising how quickly one can move when you really need to.........I suggest draining the box first before you start mucking around with the shaft.
Basically the rear diff it what holds the shaft in place and sealed against the gearbox.
You could get another shaft and cut of the necessary bit to plug the hole, but then I don't know how you would hold it in place?

Thanks, gee lucky I didn't just go and try this out on the driveway!! be in trouble with oil everywhere.....I've only removed the rear axles thus far.
What yous reckon, if the half shaft is split, its joined by flange bolts on the diff side of the centre bearing, so that means the gearbox half stays in, and would hold ok?

You could split the uni joint at the gearbox end and cable that piece to the gearbox? In FWD it shouldn't spin, so as long as you put it in 4WD you should be right? It is a bit dodgy but you should be able to keep the car on the road.

That should work to, just keep an eye on it

wire in the yoke ?? that's is a good idea so long as kept in fwd, and no friction present enough to tear it outs

I'm pretty sure I remember Chubby removing the rear section of the tail shaft and not having any trouble.
