LSD Question *56k Warning*

This is a picture of two diffs, left side one is open diff - 3.7:1 from L series 4WD, and right side is from an 1st Gen Liberty, its an LSD diff 3.9:1.

I have to change from 3.9:1 to 3.7:1 to suit my Liberty. (going to take out the crown from 3.7:1 and put it in 3.9:1 case replacing 3.9:1) Can you tell me what kind of LSD is it? is it Clutch Pack or Viscous LSD? As far I know, I bought this from a mate of mine, he said it was from RX Leone?

Before I take apart/put together what do I need to do for service with that LSD? Is there any special tools that require taking the diff apart (I'm aware about the torx tool, gonna get one today) and I have the CV joints seals for the spines. What else? What kind of oil should I use (please, good recommendations), what oil rating shall I use/LSD oil??

your liberty has a 3.7 diff?

what gearbox are you running?

Just keep the side plates(bearing shells and shims) and centres together.

Don`t know if its a clutch pack, if its a VLSD any std 80/90 gear oil is fine.

Swap over the crown onto the LSD centre and then you`ll have to notch/grind the housing to get it in....you`ll see, just grind a little off the side of the housing with a ragg stuffed in it over the pinion, then wash with pertrol or diesle when its ready.

Yeah It seems to be..
Its Nov1994 Liberty 2nd Gen. 5MT AWD single range gearbox. I haven't yet taken the rear diff off from the Liberty to see how many teeths it has on the crown in the open diff.

check it out before you go to all the trouble of swapping centres.

I am sure your car will have a 3.9 rear. You should be able to just bolt up the new diff

Yeah a 3.9 for sure in that lib....

Tho if the other diff is from a RX wouldn`t it be a 3.7.......so the LSD is a 3.7 and you have to turn it into a 3.9 !?

Hmmm yeah I should check before I start with the project... Funny that I checked with Subaru and that guy from tech took the gearbox number and checked up and said it was 3.7:1, even had photocopies from the books, pointed at 3.7:1.

Sometime soon I will open up the cover before I start changing over the ratio, if its same ratio then I will leave it as it is....

Another thing I noticed, the 3.7:1 Diff from L Series 4WD, the diff cover is all "cracked" up as I could see all these cracks on the cover (its not completely cracked into pieces, just can see all these cracks), where abouts the LSD Diff isn't cracked up at all, its in perfect condition - very clean looks new. Is it possible that 3.7:1 is screwed due excessive heat/thin oil?

You would see heat marks on the bearings and gears if thats the case...doubt it !

Whats you Gearbox numbger TY ?? .... just looked at one listing and it seems no 3.7`s were used after the L series.....

its TY752VHAAA on the gearbox.
There is only 1 sticker that is on the rear diff cover it says "VB"

This week coming, will get the oils, seals to be fitted on the diff cover to prevent the oil leak from the CV Shaft area.

Gen 2 manuals are 3.7:1. You will need a pair of gen 1 rear shafts as well to fit that centre to your Gen 2.

Sure about that? That they are different between Gen1 & Gen2¿

*quietly* you're right.... bugger but not a problem, but hopefully the EA82 wagon rear CVs does fit in the hub!! as I have a spare set here, Otherwise I know a wrecker that has rear Gen1 Liberty.

What ratio did your diff end up being AlpineRaven?
I have a 94 GEN2 Lib with the same gearbox & diff codes and from the looks of it they arent too common.

I think its because it is the first of the GEN2's sort of a change over model. Mine had a trans mount listed as from a EJ20 too.

Mine is 2nd Gen Nov 1994 model, its 3.7:1 ratio in rear diff. Also its single range AWD.

Ah... i got subaru to find out what gearbox i had that is how. Other option (pain in the arse) is to remove the rear diff cover and count how many teeths you have on the crown & read the numbers on the crown as well. such as 10:37teeths (the formula to work out is - 37 divide by 10 = 3.7:1) 10 is how many teeths on the pinon and 37 teeths is on the crown.

If its 11:39 teeths its 3.545:1 ratio (RS Liberty)
If its 10:39 teeths its 3.9:1

Ill try Subaru first but last time i tried that they werent too sure. Did you just call the parts department?

3.7 is unusual in a GEN2...how many revs do you do in 5th at 100kph?
