24 splines from memory, could be wrong.

EDIT:
24 splines indeed.

L series gearboxes have the same spline count as most EJ boxes and the XT6 box.

Ok ok i know we've been over this a million times but if they are the same as an ej why cant we use the ej clutch and flywheel?

Because the starter motor won't mesh with the ring gear, it will be miles away.

so....if one was willing to do roll starts every time...???? yes it will fit ???

Can't honestly speak from experience.

My best guess would be that since the crank boss is theoretically in the same spot the spigot bearing of both flywheels would be too. Now we know the input shaft goes into the spigot bearing on an EA82 flywheel on an EJ motor, so theoretically it would on an EJ flywheel too. Therefore the driven plate spines *should* sit right on the 5 speed input shaft. Assuming also that the EA82 thrust bearing lines up with the pressure plate springs, clutch actuation should be possible.

Then there's the problem that the EJ ring gear sits a good 12mm forward of the EA82 ring gear. Remember the EA82 flywheel is dished, with the ring gear protruding out as opposed to the EJ flywheel which is flat.

Anyone prove me wrong? I thought this was the main reason the EJ clutches & flywheels could not be used with the EA gearbox.

I'm pretty sure you could use the friction plate from a EJ in a EA82. The 89 lib one I have is a 225mm and has the same splines. Although the centre sits about 4mm offset vs the EA friction plate. The pressure plate won't fit to a EA flywheel IIRC. And I doubt the EJ flywheel would fit in the EA engines bellhousing, but I can't say for sure.

He's talking about the flywheel and clutch setup for an EJ mated to an L series box, so the EJ flywheel and pressure plate will fit the motor.

AAAAHHHHHHH so thats it. from everything ive read i always thought it was because the imput splinds were different

Ah, ok. Wasn't clear to me, but now it makes sense.

I believe if you wanted to you could make an adapter plate which holds the Liberty starter motor at the right spacing to mesh the gears, then turn the gear around on the starter motor and grind off the back of it. This will give it the extra length it needs, but quite a bit of work.

There may be another option, but I'm working on that at the moment with my Brumby... More on that later when I figured it out. I'll email you Ian if I get it figured.

YEah there is another option ;)...use a EJ motor and box ! Problem solved !!

I think the main issue if that the EJ fw&crutch is a lot thicker than the recessed and smaller EA unit...you would need to space the box back some(not only for the starter)...then this would cause shaft length issues.

The spline is the same from L to EJ....its also only 0.01mm different to a nissan plate...skyline, patrol 4x4 !! , etc etc
