Cooked Ruby's EA82

Well its been done now... the pick a part engine is officially dead for road use, all its good for now is moving the car around the yard.

About 2 weeks ago i cooked it (twice) on my way to work at benders from the pero's joint. I had just got a new radiator cap but didn't put it on because the car was hot and the temp was fine at that point. Both times i cooked it I was on a hilly section where there was no where to pull over safely so i pushed ruby to a safe spot (prob did more damage in the process).

Now it blows a thick blue smoke out the oil filler cap, leaks oil out of the oil pump and blows bubbles through the cooling system even with only a little time running. We discovered last night that when you take the oil cap off there's a popping sound in there, thoughts on this are a hole in one of the piston heads...

For now she's off the road til i get the new engine together (block is back as one, now to put piston heads in and grind in the valves)... She also needs a new heater core...

That's that for now :(, updates will trickle in slowly.

R.I.P lil buddy... well in the short term by the sounds of things anyway.

I'd like to do this, but several reasons why i havn't:

1) funds
2) i've already committed to building up a standard engine
3) insurance
4) I just want my ruby scoo back (i'm missing my 4wd lever amoung other things)

So far i've got the bottom end together, sump went on last night and now i'm currently lapping in valves, done three between work and other activities (I'm rather slow at it).

The dead engine will hopefully be pulled out tonight, i need a camshaft off it, that and i want to pull the heads off it to see what's going on in the cylinders.

That's about it for now... oh, and i've screwed the only modem that works at home (currently at uni, very fast internet :D)

Well, now the block and bottom end are together, one head all lapped in, the other about to be done... hopefully between my sis's going away dinner tonight i will get the heads on (wishful thinking i think)...

Now to lap that last head and valves in...

Update:

Uni started yesterday... the other week i got one head lapped in, my sister's dinner was a blast but got in the way of engine work. I'm currently looking for the round plate that the valve clamps sit in on top of the valve spring... Other than that the block is still sitting there.

Also i'm after a new oil pump and since no one round here in benders or the macedon ranges can get one, i priced one at the local subaru dealer and it was more than i paid for ruby scoo when i first got her... $560 or somewhere near that figrue was the asking price.

Anyone know where i can get one from? I'd like a new oil pump (budgeted for around the 170 mark) as the rest of the engine will be practically new internally. I'll put a post in the wanted section too.

Ruby Scoo's ALIVE finally!!!

Well, last sunday night after sorting out the dissy timing position, ruby scoo's new compleletly rebuilt engine started... I was so happy. That morning it was still sitting on the bench in the old house.

Now its the run-in period, i've got almost 300k's under the bonnet. And for those who bag out the EA82 (Alex... traitor...) they're quite a tight unit with a lot more punch than i expected - that said i havn't given it to her yet... i'll save that for later when she's run in... but still runs surprisingly well.

Its good to have my subie back after just over two months of sitting in the same spot.

Oh, and i found what my knocking noise was, i thought it to be the front right outter CV knuckle... turned out to be my clutch disc, you could move the meaty stuff back and forth... swapped that for another one in the shed. Now the front right knuckle is clicking... something elso to save for.

Well, i hope to be meeting you guys sometime in the year for those in vic (and abroad if i'm in your part of the country). Just need some trip money now ;)

1000km oil change and a d***head on the road...

WHOO-HOO! 1000km clocked up in a week on the new engine. Had its first oil and filter change, i got two oil leaks so far :D but they'll be easy to fix, one's the easy cam seal the other is the washer on the drain plug that i didn't replace...

So now its back up to normal driving speeds without gunning it, still gotta be nice to this engine but not baby it (whatever that means).

I'm really happy with how its all going, especially more so that i did the rebuild from the crank outwards...

One thing that almost put me off the road was a stupid d***head who tried to cut me off when i was in the centre of three lanes, i was about 1/3rd the way up his car and he indicated and started to move left into my lane before he saw me. He then braked hard, passed me from behind into the outside left lane, accelerated hard up my left and tried to squeeze through a gap between the car i was gaining slowly on and me. Needless to say he didn't quite make it, clipping my roo bar (no damage), i tooted in protest and he then decided to hit the brakes as if a roo just jumped out at him with me on the anchors close behind. then he started waving his arms around moving on, followed by "playing the brakes", not changing this until i moved lanes. He had no right to do this, nor did i feel that i had done him wrong to act like that. This was on plenty road... i wonder if its too late to report him (cop shops too far on a bike now, its moved out of the CBD into Golden Square - for those that know bendigo). got his rego - UNW 392 - a dark ford, mid nineties falcon, probabily a drug runner with that behaviour. I also had the car loaded with stuff from a house that's due to be torn down today, so the car wasn't exactly light in pulling up on time...

Well, that said, i'm glad my ruby scoo is still in one piece with the roo bar in the right place.
