Alright, so I've got this clicking noise coming from the tailshaft on my brumby. Now, It happened a while back and I put new uni joints in it and it was all sweet, but now it's back!! (Uni joints no more than a month and a half old.)

The noise as best I can describe it is a metallic clicking, once every rotation of the shaft. Doesn't matter whether it's in gear or not, as long as the back wheels (and hence tailshaft) are turning.

Is it possible that the housings around the uni joints are too stuffed for the new joints to really fix the problem?? If so is there anything else i can do other than buy a new tailshaft?

Also, could be nothing more than coincidence, but I was running my 14" wheels when it happened the first time, then today I sold them and went back to my old 13" until I get my NEW wheels, and I think the noise started again today...
Can't see how this would affect anything though.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Mine clicks some times... my joints on my shaft have grease nipples... when i grease em the click goes away.

Had exactly the same situation with my uni's , they were brand new and after only a few months started clicking , greased them up and they stopped clicking.

I had the same thing, the uni-joint was stuffed, got Driveline to repair it ( they built in the first place ) and it stopped clicking, instead it starting making a horrible grinding noise at 85+km/h. I thought it was rear bearings, then diff, finally I discovered it was the tail shaft.

Well it could be the CVs, but from what I've heard they usually make noises when you're cornering... am i right about that? Plus all my cv boots are only a few months old, so they should be nice and greased up.
I'll try greasing up the uni joints, but I'll have to buy a grease gun first I'm guessing...

Yeah well, I must be having a bad day cuz my shaft is one greasy nipple short now. Bought a grease gun this arvo, got to work on one, no dramas, second one, gun wouldn't come off and I snapped the nipple off trying to get it off.
Now I thought I could just replace it with one of my old uni joints, but the hex head bit came off with it, so there's nothing to grab.
Anyone know of a way of getting what's left of the thread out??

Fixed the clicking noise though, so it wasn't alllll bad.

Yep that would be the shot, I highly recommend those things, worked very well for me a few times.
Failing that you might have to drill it out and tap in a larger thread, but you will get metal shavings inside it then.

Hmmm, I'd heard of something like that. Might as well give it a go.

Yeah I vote easy out as well, but with a good spray of Rost Off or at least WD40 first and give it a chance to soak, half hour should do it.

Rost Off is really good stuff, my brother introduced me to it, it has unseized things I had declared a disaster and a complete right off, WD40 made no difference to them.

Success!! Bought a screw extractor this arvo and the snapped thread came out no worries. Grease nipple off my old uni joints even had the same thread!

many MYs and Brumbys have this coz they don't know what it is or care or can't hear it above the tappets but can be heard engine off and just rolling down hill. noise back in six weeks ? bugger

Ok, so update on the problem is this.
After greasing both the uni joints properly, the noise returned within a day. The grease did seem to come out very easily though, like there's large amounts of grease splattered up under my car now. Is this normal??

Secondly, on close inspection and manipulation of the uni joints, the bearings seem to be loose within the housings. I thought maybe if you could get thicker C clips it might compensate for the housings being worn??
Has anyone ever tried this?

Maybe I'm just delaying the inevitable of getting a whole new tailshaft, but I'd rather not have to spend $150 right now.

having just stuck a new C clip style uni in my L type tailshaft in the 5 speed Brumby the instructions on the box state the lube from factory is only to protect it while in storage and to grease it up on fitment. In the rush to get going I nearly forgot, I did, but got back under and greased her up.


wondering if yours weren't greased up on assembly ??
