turbo'ing EJ22???

as titile says, can it be done? rough estimate on monies and are forged pistons etc around for them?

i wouldnt mind looking into something like that for the brumby. build the engine up with port and polish.

advantges being: no cutting chassis rails (easy convert back to stock)
i will know complete history of engine (reliabiltiy)
possibly more power than WRX available

i dont think i will be putting a huge turbo on it, just enough for some fun and excitment, and to kill commodores and fords:)

any suggestions i should take into account?

Buy factory EJ22t pistons or the many aftermarket alternative...forged or not, plenty around for 22 bore.

...quad cam heads would be nicer, but single cam EJ heads would work just not rev as well in std form.

Turbo ECU...aftermarket, choose you poison....due the low cost of a EJ turbo ecu and loom please don`t suggest "making the EJ22 ECU do he job !"...ok suggest and do it if you want !

...go on cut the chassis rails ! and slap in a quad cam, might as well go EJ25 turbo.

What you want to know ! ; All you need to do change to turbo pistons to be mechanically ready...or run low boost, reliability&potential by slapping the huffer on a std EJ22. What size are the EJ22e injectors anyways ?

wouldn't a sml supercharger provide better low rpm power when offroading? but i still like the idea of an ej25 turbo jay, you can go smaller than the last engine you put in the L :)

I dont rekon it's worth the trouble of building motors specially to fit the car. At the end of the day cutting the chassis rails is pretty minor compaired to that. Also remember that the most reliable motor is a standard one.
Jay with your ultra awesome welding skills I'm sure you could widen the rails in a neat enough way for it to not even be noticable :)

no doubt i could but that would be one of the major points of getting a yellow if i ever get pulled over...

not sure if the ej 25 would still fit with enough room for the radiator, have been following brumbyrunners build and he's had to shift it to the rear. other than that there is the option of completely modifying crossmember, linkages, tail shaft, chassis rails and slifing the engine back a few inches, however that would require more removed from the rails..

I think i'd prefer to buy a $500 ej22, rebuild it with turbo internals and have a fresh engine. is likely to be cheaper and easier than a 2.5t

There are two places in south queensland that that do 2.5 stroker kits for the 2.2 with forged internals, ones PeFOURmance motorsport but i cant remember the other one, maybe rigoli racing, i was also told that there is a bolt on turbo exhaust manifold for the EJ single cam motors

This is what i want to do in my brumby but unfortunatly funds dont permit it yet and i need to do my convert now

Also didnt brumbyrunner move his engine and gearbox foward 2 inches so he could fit 30" tyres with out cutting the fire wall? i believe he did and that is why the radiator no longer fitted in the engine bay

i think its time to find a ej22 to build up as a spare and turbo the leone ej22 ;) td04 would give her some kick, just to find a manifold and cheep apexi pfc

I actually moved the engine forward 80mm. Even the radiator crossmember had to be moved. But I would have put the radiator in the back anyway. It's out of the way and doesnt fill up with mud all the time.

If you are on a budget, buy a mid 90s $2500 front cut and go from there. You'll be up and running faster and everything will be stock as a rock.
If you don't want a bonnet scoop (or a front mount i/c) and are really on a budget, grab a $1650 early RS Lib front cut with water to air i/c. Advertised as having 147kW they will give an MY a 160% power increase over stock.

Cutting the rails to fit a quadcam is a very minor mod and can be done a few different ways. The backyard boys do EJ conversions over a weekend and don't charge much to do it.

agreed cutting the chasis rails, if done properly, really isnt a big deal.

just had a scroll throught he ej22 stroker kits... not sure if $4000 to $6000 is justifiable.

Could i fit a B4 twin turbo eng with radiator in front? Cutting chassis rails doesnt bother me too much.

Yea they arnt cheap but oh well, up to you what you want to do, im not real keen to go cutting chassis rails, unless it was to fit an sti engine into a gen 1 brumby

You can fit any 4cylinder EJ engine (twincam or quadcam) in there without moving the radiator.
Best bang for your buck is a turbo EJ20. They are plentiful, super reliable and have huge power in totally stock form. The only tradeoff is modifying the rails but now you aren't worried about that so awesome!

Take a look at the engine bay of a twin turbo Suby, you won't want one anymore...soo many extra gizmos and vacuum tubes. They don't really perform any better anyway...that's why people upgrade B4's to single turbo setups!

the thing is vidler wants to be original (so i gather) so a little extra effort would seem fine to make a unique machine. ej20g swap has been done a few times now. how reasonable is it to get an ej25t?

yeah 2.5l STI engine would be the go..i reckon youd youd pay a packet for one but....or even an 2.0l STI engine would be good....thats still different not many people running the STI engines...

i remember hearing about a guy turboing an ej18 impreza...
he said it worked really well had he done the oil line to the turbo right, ended up dropping a hose and therefore lost oil resulting in spun bearing...
but yes it is well do-able...
its your personal choice of what combo you go for thou
