A few weeks back I acquired 2 gearboxes from ebay. 1 was a single range L series FT box. The other was an empty shell with two sets of internals, 1 part-time, 1 full-time. This is the second gearbox with some gears in it. What have I made ?

Isn't it the rear section that makes all the difference?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but you have there is a 5speed box and what you put behind that determines if it's FT or PT 4wd.

if that's the case, couldn't I just put the rear section from the single range FT box onto my current 5spd box ? I thought the rear output shaft (not sure if that's the correct term ) was different and needed swapping inside the box as well ?

The centre diff won't fit in a standard part time box - the tail is bigger.

the full time box also has two bottom shafts one inside the other
the outside shaft holds the gears and the inside one drives the front diff

the part time boxes dont need the two shaft arrangment because thay drive the front wheels all the time
