Head bolts.... re-torque?
Head bolts.... re-torque?
I've heard conflicting opinions about re-torqueing the head bolts after running the engine when doing headgaskets What do people think?

Yeah it's best practice to do that. Says so in every workshop manual I've had for various cars.

sometimes yes all engines are different and it also depends on what sort or brand of gasket your using and what type of headstuds the engine has...ive replaced alot of heads in my time (im a mechanic) and there arnt many engines around these days that you have to retension...if ya use a good quality gasket and hylomar you shouldnt have a problem...but if a gasket set etc says to retension then yes retention it......

When I did my head gaskets on my EA82T I used genuine.
Torque them up 15NM more than factory specs list & gave them a good spray of holymer. Had no problems at all. The gaskets have been in the car about 16 Months now & I run 15 PSI off road & 8 PSI on road. Re-torqueing is very difficult with the EA82T as you need to pull the cam casing & timing belts off to do it. Not worth the effort. Boxer Motor service (AKA The Subaru Shop) did this to all the EA82T head gaskets they did.

Holymer is a gasket joining compound. It is the best product out there.timmo wrote: What is holymer? spray on sealer or something?
