Sloppy gears

Greetings,

First post here and first Subaru (86 Brumby).
Have what seems to be a common problem with the gear stick flopping around and going through the fix process.
Trying to remove the inner bushes from the well the end of the gearstick goes into.
After the gator comes off, does the rest of the assembly pull out? Having problems removing it. Tried a little bit of heat on the outside but seems to be very tight.
Sorry if question is long winded

Regards,

Neil.

Most of the time the slop is caused by the gearbox output shaft and the shift not gripping each other that well. The easiest way to fix it is to knock out the 2 old roll pins and but a cut down the shifter side and put a rated bolt through the roll pin hole, if that makes sense. I think i have a pic somewhere.

the dude that owned mine years ago felt the need to weld the selector shaft to the slide that fits over and connects the stick. that fixed most slop but made it impossible to replace the seal that they nearly melted and also left too much material on shaft so that the weld would ram the seal each time 2 & 4th were selected. also used a nut and bolt to replace roll pins but did not cut a slot as mentioned above.

The best method was to fit a five speed!
