MY's, L's and EJ mounting differences

I recall reading that to fit an EJ into an MY is easier than an L ( or vice versa?) when it comes to engine mounts on the crossmember due to the plane or angle of things.

Q. does this mean there IS a difference between MY and L engine xmembers angles ?

If this is so it might explain my angle problems when fitting the L series 5 speed into my brumby.

Q have people also experienced the angle thing when fitting EA82's into MY/Brumby then ?


i am thinking this as i am asking self if i should rebuild my current EA81/5 speed gearbox crossmember to release all its stresses first before fitting my EA82T ( i modded the EA81 crossmember to take the L series 5 speed and when fitted it took some considerable force to locate things, ended up with re angled engine (fixed that with the stabiliser adjuster, now got NVH BAD ! )

i originally fited my 82t to my brumby 4 speed. fitted an l series 5 speed later on. didnt have many problems with the 5 speed other than the shifter setup. used the standard crossmember, didnt have to mod it at all. used the 4 speed mount brackets (elongated the bolt holes) on the 5 speed. box has hitting the floor on the drivers side slightly. there was a big unused bolt thread on the box, cut it off and now theres heaps of clearance. motor is angled back slightly but that shouldnt cause you any problems. sounds like the gearbox is touching the floor somewhere causing your nvh problems.

got a feeling holes needed elongation at an angle rather than up and down

my engine went up at the back, down at the front forcing my LPG vapour ducting (metal tube) to rub against radiator.

the big unused threaded boss, yep , cut that off after fitting

i reckon nvh coming through overtensioned engine stay (overtensioned to correct the angle of motor)

I see this point quoted frequently, however I have not experienced this myself in two conversions to L series, involving both a turbo crossmember and a non turbo version. With the L though, you do need a spacer between the engine mounts and the crossmember for an EJ as there is a little lip on the crossmember that the EJ engine mounts are too big for and the spacer lifts the engine up a little to clear, this also fixes the problem of the larger EJ flywheel rubbing on the crossmember.

Not saying there isn't crossmember/engine mount setups out there that don't require elongation though!

the elongatin of holes i was refering to are those in the MY gearbox mounts that are modded to screw to L box in order to use MY gearbox xmember.

OK so L use a spacer for EJ mounting at the engine mounts, got it , ta

I am just trying to put off disabling car up on stands and pulling stuff apart - given the brute force required to get gbox mounts to bolt up when 5 speed went in, it wn't happen a second time, it'll need to be done right this time;
