EJ25 SOHC Timing Belt, DIY?

Post by BaronVonChickenPants » Tue Jul 03, 2007 11:55 pm

My outback needs the 200k KM service, just wondering if it's worth attempting this myself or should I just say "sod it" and pay someone to do it?

I have access to all parts at trade price I just don't know if it's that hard or if it's worth paying just for the piece of mind, especially on my daily driver.

Cheers,
Jordan.

well if it was a DOHC like my dads then it cna get a bit daunting if youve never done one before but a SOHC should only be easir lol
the tensioner is an annoying part as u need a vice cabaple of extending far enough to stick it in otherwise ull never get the pushrod back in (and then you need to shove something in the hole to keep it there till your ready)
and that is presuming that it will have the same tensioner
but also on the DOHC the 2 cam pulleys lining up required two of us as one would move unless you held it there with a socket and got someone else to put the belt rouns the others
the other hard part would be gettin the Crank Pulley Bolt out without a rattle gun. requires a bit of muscle work (to get ours off we had a breaker bar and kept hittin it with a kinda small sledge hammer and finally got it) but they also need to be done up tight again

are u also sure its a SOHC??? i only thought that they had EJ25 with DOHC's or the H6 3.0L but i culd be wrong here

Hey Jordan,

I have done a SOHC belt and can give you a hand. Providing nothing goes wrong it only takes about 3 hours or so.

On the old server I even had a "how-to" pictorial, but that got lost :(

Please watch before posting!

Its no harder than doing an EJ22 one which is relativly easy when you have the front off check all bearings and the water pump and replace if needed

yeah i wouldn't bother paying someone, its not that hard to do it yourself - but do the correct way with the belt tensioner otherwise it'll take you 2 hours (it did for me) did that a couple of times on EJ22s.

I must admit, SOHC is lot easier than DOHC.

Another thing, you dont really need any special tools, but the crank bolt can be a bitch... but I used the starter trick (old times now, now uses air rattle gun/ratchet)

The tensioners on the later cars are different to the earlier rs/ej22.
Definitely replace the water pump, idlers should be changed as well...
cam seals,crank seal...
