Post by stamp_licker » Mon Sep 03, 2007 6:12 pm

Anyone made their own g/box mounts? What were they made out of? how have they held up?Wanting something longer lasting than the standard rubber mounts.

Hey postie, nice name change...

Dunno about making entirely new mounts but i've heard of people welding 3 chain links to the mounts so that their movement is restricted. I don't know how harsh this sounds when the mount meets the chain's length, i've only heard of it being done.

Yep both sides of the g/box mount are bust, the rubbers aren't perished just seperated from the metal.Explains why the sump was touching at Longreach the whole box and motor has shifted, possible the cause of the vibrations i had.So close to becoming a manual.

lol

just replace the mount and see how you go. They are $120 new. My GX ones are completely torn, have been for years. Gearbox clunks around every time i start the car.

The VTD mount that came with my rear housing is in good nick though, and its done about 100,000kms in TT cars

I would try replacing with a new bush, and if you tear it again you probably have some other issue causing it (torn engine mounts? misalignment of your crossmember etc)

Maybe the engine needs a stay rod to stop it pulling forward causing the mounts to tear? Just a theory.

You can buy Urethane filler from car stores, I did use it to fill up on engine mounts a long time ago for a FWD car which always tore engine mounts and was fed up with it so I used Urethane to fill empty space up - lasted me 5 months till the car was write off.

You can buy a tube - would be approx $30 something - last time I bought it was 4 yrs ago.
Cheers

they dont break for no reason though Will.

You have a mount designed for a 200KW TT breaking behind a 100KW EJ22

something is causing this!

The product is Sikaflex, there is couple of variations of this, the contact type is what you want. Even Bunnings have some in stock, but check the use by date on the tube as they go off.
I used them on the MY gearbox mounts and last 2 years while I had it, and Subarino has used it for the same thing too.

Jan, can you please remind me to take the Brumby to the next meeting?

Will, the mount brackets I've fitted have firmed up the gearbox a treat and I can't see them breaking easily, or wearing anytime soon. They're easy to fit too (heck, if Jan and I can fit them then anyone can). Only downside I've noticed when compared to Subaru OEM mounts is that these new ones allow slightly more noise and vibration through to the floor.

You're welcome to have a sqizz at these brackets anytime. :)
