There has been talk in here at times asking if a Brumby/MY 4 speed box would handle the EA82T 'power' . As you'd almost have to use an EA82 flywheel (wouldn't you?) therefore pressure plate. What drive plate would you use ?


Raises another question. The input shaft splines on MY boxes, were they the same for both diameter clutches used ?


Thinking that the torque of a 4 speed behind an EA82T would be interesting. Torquier ?

Had an ea82 non 't' with the 4 speed in my brumby. had to use the original flywheel as the 82's was too large and interfered with the box's bell housing dunno bout the splines.

drill the ea81 flywheel bolt holes out by 1mm. use the ea81 clutch

i dont think the box will handle the power at all tbh lol but in sayin that i will be bolting up a 4speed behind an EJ soon enough

input shaft spliens as far as i know were same

and driveplate ? if by that u mean Clutch Disc then ud need the EA81 disc as it has correct splines and ud alos need it as same diameter as flywheel and pressure plate

i had a weird 1 last week i have a 1986 ea82 na leone fwd sedan right i was doin the clutch/pressure plate/flywheel.....easy u say lol well...me and Bluesteel (thanxs m8 ) pulled the box out easy part:) loked at the clutch kit that i got ...um too big whats goin on here pressure plate and clutch plate were too big ok , cool cool ill get the fwd clutch kit no worries....the bit that baffeled got us wondering why the clutch kit was so wrong....

so i got my very good m8 around Will ( My_Sti) he had a look and straight away was like "um i think thats a ea81 gearbox in ur car m8" clutch fork was on the diff side and the input shaft was a 21 spline shaft.... hmm...hmm whats going on here and in the mea time i brought a lightened flywheel for the ea82 so i have a lightened flywheel and an rpm heavy duty clutch kit that i cant use but sir will had a brain wave lets use the 82 flywheel the 82 pressure plate but we get the 21 spine 9" 81 clutch disc...hmm im thinking cool but the throw out bearing is different nope all good we can use the 81 bearing no worries....ok then but then the last prob was the new flywheel was 5mm smaller then the old 1 so we have to soace the hell out of the clutch fork adjustment

so after all that i have a ea81 gearbox/clutch plate/throw out bearing..and a ea82 pressure plate/flywheel..phew srry for the long response lol cheers BEN

The EA81 and EA82 flywheels have the same bolt pattern for the engine but they also have the same bolt pattern for the pressure plate, so just check out which of the flywheels you have will take a 9" clutch and get the EA81 9" kit.

Having said that, if you're going to all this effort for the engine why are you staying with the MY 4 speed? Although it's technically a weaker box I'm sure it would handle the power of a standard EA82T, for a while at least, but that extra gear makes it so much nicer to drive.

I doubt there would be any gearing advantage, from memory the ratio's were close enough to identical except theres another gear between your current 3rd and 4th.

Wow that certainly is strange. So the whole time you had the car you never wondered why your L series had only 4 gears??

um no andrew t i never wonder why i had a ea81 gearbox in my l seires sedan cause it s a 5 speed box m8....never looked at the gearbox till we pulled the clutch out....

EA81 FWD boxes were 5 speed, most of them probably still are but this is getting off topic.

Well, l don't know much about the 82 clutch hook up, l can tell you for sure the box will handle the stress, (within reason of course), my ute although an 81T, has quite a bit more horsepower than the standard 82T has run the humble 4 speed for nearly 2 years now without a hiccup on a standard 81 clutch set up. What you might not like is First gear though.

alrighty, good info guys - all in one nights post. were not only the GLF five speed fwd and the my sedans 4 speed ?

As far as I'm aware every MY FWD was 5 speed.

I have no experience with them what-so-ever. Do not believe a word i have uttered in this dept. I just thort the GLF 5 was special coz it was 5 speed as opposed to whot i thort was normal 4 speed. Subaru wouldn't do that to us would they ?
