were there GLs with 4.444 ratio?

well, it seems I've finally found a rear diff for my conversion!!!
the seller told me that it came out of an some old GL model ('89 or something) but I was under the impression that the older models did not use this ratio...
does anyone know if there were any old turbo models made with 4.444 ratio? if yes, will it be OK to connect it to my 4EAT with front 4.444 ratio from a Legacy/Liberty Trubo? just want to make sure before I trash my transmission...

Not in Australia at least - as far as I'm aware worldwide.
Only stock L-series final drive ratios are 3.9:1, 3.7:1 and 3.454:1.

Most were 3.7:1, while the automatics were 3.454:1.

ok... I picket it up today...
it's marked as a '91 Legacy/Liberty and has a 4.444 sticker on it... does that mean it came out of a Turbo Liberty AT?
it's a direct bolt on for my '89 GL Coupe!
I can also get a 4.444 diff out of a '02 Outback but that requires some shaft modding... think I'll just stick with the older model for this time and try it out...

It should be an R16, which is the same diff as in your L-series as it is. That basic R series diff is also found under the bum of Skylines and Silvias, so there is not end of options as regards ratios and centres. The only real differences are the shafts and flanges.

1.8 and 2.0 NA Legacy autos had 4.44 open rear diffs. That vis what a GL would be.
If you have a Limited Slip centre you can fit it to the 4.44 housing.
One more thing, does the diff have 17mm headed plugs or 1/2" square drive?

He will be talking about the plugs in the back of it for the drain and fill holes.

Just checking you didn't get a small diff. After ~93 under 2.0 auto engines(and some EJ22's) got smaller rear diffs and they have the different fill plugs.
If you have an LSD already you can just swap the centre into the 4.44 case with little effort.

ok... this should work fine with my 4EAT and 4.444 Legacy turbo front diff, right?
cleaned it up a bit and spraid it black today... looks a lot better...

If the ratio is the same then it is fine. Does it have a sticker on the back saying 4.4 ratio or is it just what the bloke said? I am not saying he is lying, just that he may have been ill-informed. I would take the back cover off and do some counting to make sure. You will have it off any way to convert it to LS.

yes, it has a sticker... 4.444 is the final ratio...
