this is a silly question but what is the size of a 1991 L series (sports wagon) tank?

I get 50 litres of juice in mine. For ages I thought it only held 30, but then found out that my fuel gauge was dodgy and there was still 20 litres left in it when I thought it was empty!

At least I never ran out of fuel though...

haha yea same, it only took 30 bucks at... a $1.30 to fill my tank, i thought this was weird and figured my tanks outa wack. I use my odometer but don't know if my petrol light works so this practice is still a bit sketchy...

I think the l series fuel tank was 60lt

i can never fit anymore than 45 litres in my L..which would make it about a 50L tank i think

Says 60 litres in the online manual for the L series, not really game to test though when out and about, only ever managed to squeeze 49 litres in at one stage, might have to take a jerry can and see what I can get out of it!

Best I've managed is 58L in mine

yer because i seem to get around 40 litres but i thought it may have been 60 so im not sure if i can go another 20 litres or not, it would be handy to have that extra 20 litres. has anyone put 60 litres in an L series with a stock tank? Pee jay do u have a stock tank?

Yep, normal EFI tank, with a few rather large dents in it

hmm.. My fuel tank is as ***** (why the stars, i wrote Pric k?), the handle always will click off so i can only put the nozzle in a couple of cms to have continual flow,
I guess its because of the design and the back pressure doesn't work or something along these lines, could this be happening to all you guys with the Ls? maybe an overall subaru fault?

Yeah mine does that sometimes. But it seems to do it less than it used to

factory manual says 60 litres. You'd think when i put 15 litres into my sedans tank from bone dry empty guaranteed it would show 1/4 full. It sits just above the empty mark !

hard to explain but doesn't the top end of fuel tanks go quicker then the bottom half of the tank...
Not literally, where you lose fuel quicker and slower, but thats what the meter on the dash displays. The needle always seems to drop down to the lower half of the tank and then it sits for longer until empty? or is this something i just made up, maybe theres room for a conspiracy in there somewhere.

but this is to reply to Steptoe, that putting 15ls might not do anything until 40ls (for example) is put in, then the needle will respon. Quickly jumping to the full level??

This fuel needle thing is my safety net... i still fill up when just above empty. I drained my tank once an then stuck 5ltrs in before going to the servo to fill her up, i got somewhere near 55ltrs so was happy. I always fill right to the nozzle, it takes a little time but i reckon you should make the most of your tank capacity. And usually after completely filling the tank i'm off on a long trip of 100km or more...

After emptying my tank the guage doesn't behave the same, its rather frustrating.

Anyway, so long as i've got fuel in there i'm happy.

i think the empty mark with 15 litres is prolly a built in idiot register so we all don't run out the moment the needle registers empty. call it reserve. So you would do 45 to empty mark and another 15l to run out ! Makes good logic when dealing with Joe Public. LPG bottle gauge readouts much the same

for a while i found that the needle would go up much despite the fact i just put in 20 litres, it would never register that i had that much fuel in the car so i just assumed i have a large tank on the car, but after trying to fill her up i found that the fuel hose kept clicking off at around 40 litres

Prob not so practical but we could use weight to figure out how much fuel is on board. Filler right up until its spilling out a bit then get to a weight station and weight the car (minus the km driven in fuel, have to know ur average consumption), then when the tank is almost empty weigh again and see how much less the car is. Obviously u will need to make sure you don't add people and or gear to the car. Take a jerry can and weight it, then fill and weight again, just to make sure its 1kg per litre, not sure if it would be exact?

Also re filling the tank and the bowser hose/nozzle clicking off due to back pressure, For my liberty I have to turn the handle clockwise after inserting to the filler spout before pulling the trigger to start the fuel pumping, ie the hose end of the handle is pointing to 10/11 ish. Any other position and it clicks off whenever I open her up full. Can be very annoying. The L is the same but not near as bad, must breathe better or something. Has done this from day one.

So next time u filler up and it clicks but u think there should be more room try either moving the handle upwards or just going slower on the gun so to reduce the back pressure. On long trips (coz I fillerup ALL the way) I usually get approx 100k down the road before the needle starts to show less than Full! Most I have ever put in the Liberty is 58L, light was on for nearly 100k...was coasting down the hills and going so easy on the throttle, crapping myself bigtime. Wife was telling me off all that time too. Never have let it get so low without knowing there fuel nearby again. But fun now in hindsight

Well that turned out to be an essay...

On my last brumby I had a the same problem, gauge on empty but only took 35L to fill it. I drained the tank then added 5 litres as my safety margin, removed the sender in the tank and bent the arm until it move onto empty, my take a couple of goes to get if right. The only problem with doing this is now the gauge stays on full for over 100km and when it gets to 1/2 its only really got 1/3 of a tank, but at least you can use the whole tank.
