I just wanted to not muck around if I can afford it.

If I go for a 2nd hand box you get a short warranty and it may cost you more than what a reconditioned box will if the first replacement turns out to be a dud after said warranty...if you catch my drift.

I know a place called "All Wheel Drive transmissions in Rowville/Mulgrave/ or Dandenong in Melbourne, They do rebuild gearboxes and does have warranties on them, pricey but they do good job.

I had my 1990 4wd auto rebuilt by Ron Hill Automatics at Maroochydore, Qld.
He gives a 3 year warrantee. Was a full rebuild around $3500 including remove and refit, and it works like a new one. These guy's are good at it, I guess thats why they can give a 3 year warrantee. Was done over 2 years ago, very happy with it.

I had one rebuilt by a different company years ago and was not that happy, it worked ok but it was a bit noisy.

Just get a late model low km one and swap it in. I got one from an '04 forester for $1200 that's done 45,000kms.

Yeah, may indeed look at that if the cost is less prohibitive.

an auto box is usally a lot more expensive to rebuild than a manual box as it is more involved

What was your outcome? Did you upgrade to another box? If so, I need a 5sp reco for my '90 AWD.

As of today, I still haven't got actually *done* anything about it, just waiting until next year with XMAS and rego out of the way so I have some spare cash. This will be on my Christmas wishlist. :)

Have recently discovered that 3rd gear issue seems to be becoming more infrequent, but more frequent in 4th gear. Also, it appears it does not jump out of gear in Lo range, which is interesting as much as it is handy, or more so, or the opposite.

Gear selector also seems to have a lot less play/slop in LO than it does in HI. Any more refined ideas here now?
