THIN fans

need two of them outer edge needs to be 30mm or less 14" in diameter.. tried a davies craig 14" one last night - no go. outer edge is 40 mm tapering up to 76 for the motor. outer edge hits the crank pulley and modding the fan won't fix it.
thoughts.

Does it have to be 14", obviously the bigger the better. Some of the smaller ones are not so thick. You can rig up some sort of bracket top and bottom to strap it to the rad. Not sure if this will be suitable but is an idea anyway.

chuck some fans on the front of the radiator?

no room. have two oil coolers up there and a A/C evap.
in your case no probs, in mine they have to be there.

Try the old MY tourers, saw a couple at pick a part the other week, all had a thin black fan in place of the standard engine pulley driven fan... Might be the go.

i think the davies craig ones are about the thinnest you can get. even the one i have in mine has worn away from the crank pulley bolt a bit, but it still works good.

yes, davies craig are pretty much the thinnest going.

been looking - ICE make one but its a 10" item. now I need two of them and in a 10" its not enough. the thing makes more heat than these can remove.

DC have a 10" item that will fit (50mm inc motor) but its too small..
Im now considering another option (moving things!)
keep the ideas coming.

you could maybe have a look at factory ones.... out of a bmw M* or something - something that has a big engine squeezed into a small engine bay. Just a suggestion!

The new Euro vans should be a good place to start. Found a radiator from one that looked like it could be fitted to an L series without any real drama, it had a twin thermo fan setup too. I ran out of time to check it out properly and i couldn't tell you the make or model of van sorry, it was really stripped out...
Cheers

still looking at options.

can you send me your P# pls. want to chat.

definately BMW is the way to go
I used a pair of 12inch fans from U-Pull-It that would have been lucky to be 35mm. Were very powerful. Came with a two speed function
The other thing would be smaller fans in front...my plan was to place a 7 inch fan on the front of the RS liberty heat exchanger - was enough room with slight cutting of the trailing edge of the bullbar to allow clearence.
DC make only an 8 inch from memory - motorcycle wreckers are a good source - so is ebay

do you know what they came out of? I have a german wrecker south of me that may have them. two speed is EXACTLY what I an after!
prefer to steer clear of ebay. fans on the front are not an option I'm out of room in that direction.

If you need just a smidge more room in an L series (with an L radiator) you can reverse the top mounting bolt rubbers . To do this remove the top 2 bolts and push back the top of the rad . Next remove the two thin walled steel bushes inside the rubbers and carefully pull the rubbers out of the rad support panel . If you look at them you'll notice that they are thicker on one side than the other , just refit them with the thinner side located betwen the radiator and the inner part of the rad support panel .
I did this with Ellie (85/86) RX sedan and I can now remove the elec fan with the rad in situ .
A piece of advise on elec fans , one very large fan will move considerably more air than two small ones . If you don't think so go back to your highschool mathematics and work the area of a circle formula or Pi (22/7) times the radius squared . The curtain area of the fans motor/hub pushes no air and on a small ie 10" fan there's not a lot of effective blade area . Id be looking to fit at least one 13" fan if possible .
The L series is a problem because the radiator (and the rad spport panel) are low and long and the engine sits a long way forward of the gearbox . They really should have parked the spare wheel elsewhere .
Engine oil coolers are a good idea because firstly oil runs at a higher temp than coolant so the temp differential between oil and air is greater . Secondly oil is in contact with every moving thing inside the engine so it has the ability to carry heat away to the sump and to the atmosphere via an oil cooler if present . No serious offroad L should be without an oil cooler - particularly a turbo one .
One other idea if you wanted to be a bit inventive would be to place another water cooling core somewhere that gets airflow . You could feed water to/from it via the heater plumbing connections . You wouldn't have to lose the heater if you T off from both heater hoses and fit another cable operated heater style valve to block supply in cool weather . This is just an alternate way of having a bit more total cooling capacity .
Cheers A .

disco,
thanks for the help!
in regard to the rad support panel - the lower part of mine has been sectioned, flipped and rewelded to take the larger legacy radiator. taking the top off it allowed me to get it UNDER the top radiator support and free up a LOT of room but no enough to clear the DC 14" fans. I have 670mm x 400x50 to play with and its the 50 thats killing me.
even when speaking to davies craig tech about it he aid the same thing - 2x 14" fans and no less or you will have cooling probelms.
oil coolers I FULLY agree with you on. last serious toy I owned (383 chev ute) had two of them. this one it was mandatory they they were there on this one after having a EA82T int he last sedan I had and it was always a bit warmer than I would have liked.
as for aux cooling - have yet to rule that out but its still a space thing. with a EA82 you have space to play with with a EJ20H there's next to NONE
by the time you put everything in place. I had to move the A/C components around to clear the 2nd turbo and even that is a tight fit.
looks like I'm off to a euro wrecker to do a bit of measuring. damn shame I can't drive the car there to measure them!
thanks again!!

Chris i've got 2 fans on my l and one of em is 50mm deep but tis a 300mm fan.Its off a MY that had a/c draws plenty of air.How little room is left out front? When i had a the a/c condenser and the auto cooler i still had enough room for a front mounted fan if needed. The space was freed up by the bullbar as it doesn't sit hard agianst the front but goes finish level with the grill. Can the bumper be scalloped to free up the space?

in short - none. if I move anything out there I lose the bonnet mount . I can't mod the bumper. thought about that. If you are around sat arvo I'll have a look. 50mm is sitting RIGHT on the crank pully. if its off side and the taper is sub 35-40 on the end then its ok.
