Is the noise there at any temperature or only hot?
Does your EA81 have solid or hydraulic cam followers (tappets)?
I'd be checking the oil pressure at hot idle.

i hate to say it but it sounds to me as if youve gotten something wrong when you rebuilt it, could be the sound of something coming loose

I will be able to tell you what it is in about 4 weeks. I am putting a fully rebuilt engine with a few upgrades in soon.
I have the same noise it sounds like. That is why the new engine. Once in, i am pulling down the other one to find out what the noise was.
This is only my thoughts , i have a feeling it is a bearing. The lead lets go and allows the rod to move . I have found it in one other engine ( ea81 ) .
The lead is squeezed out and oozzess( How ever it is spelt) between the crank and rod.

do you feel any vibrations in the accy pedal etc?
My beast had the centre main bearing surface separate from the backing and caused the crank to belt the backing into the block causing chamfering of the inner edge of the oil gallery slot and stuffing the tunnel bore ever so slightly - enough to render it recyclable in only one way - melting pot !!

seriously.... it could be your oil pump. seen a lot of them go on ea81s. including one on Vidlers ute recently.

Dave, a question,
How would the knock sound be coming from the oil pump( if the sound is like mine , it sounds like a main or big end ) unless oil pump is not pumping , and main or big end or both are not getting oil and are wearing which allows the knock.
I am interested in your idea about the oil pump. I have come accross some strange things with cars over the years. The more ideas put out on a subject , the more info a person gets to know. As the saying goes ' two heads are better than one' . In this case, 200 are better than one.

No the knock was caused by something lacking oil. Due to it not pumping... the oil pump itself made no noise. If something seams to make a different level of noise hot/cold then i would check the oil pressure. Another give away when we did it was the oil light came on but theses are not always trustable.
As the oil pump was removed for investigation half of it's internals fell out on the floor. Changed the pump and everything was instantly fixed.
Was just an idea... simple thing to swap if you have a spare.

Dave ,
That sounds like a sound theory to me. If motor is not getting the oil needed, it would start to make noises . Two heads are better than one.

Yeah... another thing i have learnt... the word "knock" is thrown around a lot... and it is pretty hard to define that from a tap or thud. And to always check the simple things first... i have been caught out far too many times.
