Clunking noise from the back.

Post by Suby Roo » Thu Dec 06, 2007 10:36 pm

My car was recently stolen and when recovered, something in the back makes a clunk noise constantly when i turn right. It also does it when i have my foot on the brakes and when its in 4wd.

It still goes ok but sounds like the right hand rear wheel is about to fall off.

Ideas?? thanks

good that you got it back! I had a strange noise coming from the back wheel everytime i braked, also when i drove off after braking. It was so bad i thought a wheel was going to fall off so i pulled over and pulled the wheels off but could not find anything wrong. Did it for days and got so bad i didn't drive it to work and got a mechanic to have a look at it. He drove it for a while and didn't do it, put it up and the hoist and pulled the wheels off and could not find anything wrong with.......the noise just went away! Good luck!

Maybe worn bearings or CV's? My rear bearings are flogged out and will be replaced along with the CV's(hopefully) by this time next week, prolly should replace the diff mount too...oh the list goes on...

Check the diff hanger bush or maybe centre bush for the tailshaft.

my rex did a similar thing when i turned right ( i think it was right?? ). anyways.... i had a mechanic look at the wheel bearings and cv's etc but they couldnt find anything wrong so i took it to another mechanic, this time a subi specialist ( RMS in WA ), and they found it straight away, it turned out to be the rear muffler hitting the sway bar/suspension mounts. they modified the muffler a little to clear and its never done it again.

so.... maybe somethings bent a little so it hits under cornering??

If it is a torn diff hanger bush, Boxer Service Pty Ltd, (172 South Pine Road, Brendale QLD, ph: 07 3205 4495, fax: 07 3881 3319) sell nolathane replacement bushes for $22 each.
