Wobbly front shafts

Post by foxx510 » Sat Jan 05, 2008 11:59 am

Yesterday I replaced the CV boots on one of my front axles on my 98 2gen Outback manual. I noticed when I was refitting the axle that they are both very loose in their splines, you can grab it and move the whole thing up and down quite a bit. It seems to drive ok, although the gearbox is pretty noisy. Is this normal? Is the box worn or are the splines on the inner CVs worn? It's done just over 200k km.

Thanks for any advice.

You'd really have to inspect them closely to decide wether its the splines on the stub axel or the CV cup itself. Hopefully it's just the cups as this will be cheaper to replace.

I spoke to the guy at Alldrive Subaru and he said it was normal to have a bit of movement in them. I'll leave them for now, and if I start to get vibrations I'll check it out further. Thanks.
