took the brumby to the mechanic yesterday because it felt like it was lacking in power a fair bit and having a few little episodes of pre-ignition everynow and then. turns out the carby needs a rebuild. butterfly valve in the primary shaft has corroded a bit (yet no other corrosion in the whole engine for some reason...) and the air is getting sucked in through the hole when i turn it off thus the pre-ignition. and also, the mechanic doesnt think that the vacuum secondary shaft is opening at all which explains the lack of power. so it needs a rebuild. he quoted me $550 for the rebuild and the best part of another $100 on top to refit it and tune it up etc etc. this seemed a little steep so do any of you know of a place in SE QLD Gold Coast region that does it cheaper. even just advice on how to get the carby rebuilt would be awesome.

yeh i know but they can be bitches apparently and i want to keep it stock for the time being. no point in spending heaps of money on a car that isn't all that powerful. im waiting till i'm off my P's and put a turbo in it. im on those stupid new rules blurgh.

$650 for a carb overhaul, hell, I'd do you one for about a third of that, including mechanical secondary conversion if you wish.

Or you could do it yourself with a carbie kit (about $50) and a spare weekend to get tuning right...

Bloody hell thats a bit steep! I've never been to a mechanic - a carbie kit ($50) some carbie cleaner and some compressed air (if need be can be used at local servo with the correct attachment - provided by youself) would have done the job too.

I just pulled my carbie apart today to see what was wrong with it - hard to start in the morning and slow on power uptake when putting the foot in on a hill climb. The only thing I really fixed was make a new gasket for the top part of the carbie with some ceral box carboard. Its currently running the best I've had it so far...

If you ever have the time and a mate who knows of such things near by give it a go yourself - you'll be surprised at what you can do in your shed/garage. If you get off track or can't work out whats wrong call on your mate who knows of such things to give you a hand - its all about learning!

Bloody oath, looks like I'll be doing my dual carbs on my own then... You can buy a new holley for a 454 big block for that kinda price...
