Vortex EA82 Crank nose different to L ea82 ?

Hi all , I was just read elswhere that the Vortev EA82/T engines have a keyway in the crankshaft to locate its polly V belt crankshaft pulley .
I was intending to run the normal L series V belt pulleys and I need to know if the L crank pulley will fit on the Vortex cranks nose .

I have both cranks (not here) and the Vortex one just happens to be in as new nick - just needs a linish . The L type crank is not as good .

Will this be a problem and is there an easy fix ?

Cheers Adrian .

Believe none of what you hear, half what you see.

I think the only differences I have seen is the Vortex had an ignition timing marks plate bolt to the water pump bolts

Thats it the timing mark plate is the only thing on the front different, they had this because of the Spidey obstructing the view of the inspection opening.

Cranks are the same.

Yes I have a couple of sets of those Vortex pulleys but no cranks here to compare , will be speaking to my engine builder tomorrow because he has both cranks .

I was thinking that seeing as the Vortex EA82's have the pointer they obviously must have TDC etc marks etched on their pulley . To ensure that the pulley marks mean something the pulley would have to be fitted in the right orientation to the crank . To make this repeatable and accurate usually cranks have a key/keyway in the nose and the pulley has a slot in its bore , this way the pulley will only fit in one position whilever the woodruf key is present .
I think I have a Vortex manual downloaded somewhere so I should look it up . I just hope the nose diameter is the same so the V belt pully fits as they normallyter do . It won't be a problem to put a TDC mark on it that lines up with the pointer before the inlet manifold goes on .

half asleep this morning my brain reminds me - the engine in my GLTA running v belts was a ribbed belted vortex motor with the lowline power steering pump

I did not experience your fears Adrian

Truth at last !

Both cranks are the same key and slot included meaning the pulleys are interchangable .

Only thing out of curiosity now is that we can't find any marks on the poly v belt pulley that line up with the pointer ? We'd like to line the crank up accurately and mark the std L V belt pulley but a dial indicator on the pistons in the build phase will be good enough .

Cheers A .

There should be a small nick on the front edge of the multi ve pulley for the timing mark
