Ellies rebuit EA82T update .

Hi all , as of today the EA82T pistons have returned from having their crowns ceramic (thermal barrier) coated . The chamber sides of the exhaust valves have been done as well . The heads are away being skimmed and the inlet valve guides are being K-lined . For some strange reason the exhaust valves and guides in all three sets of heads have been really good , usually turbo engines are pretty hard on exhaust valves and their valve guides .

The gasket set is not genuine but I am insisting on factory head gaskets as everyone says they survive better than aftermarket ones . If anyone has genuine part numbers for late 87 Vortex turbo head gaskets do tell . Also will be ratting up a new water pump as well .

One strange thing , I did my damndest to find the dot or groove on the Vortex crank pulley and can safely say it has no mark of any sort . No matter because I'm using a V belt one anyway and we'll mark that one .

The main bearings (NTC) are in hand but waiting for the crank pin ones .
Surprisingly will have to wait 3 weeks for genuine rings ex Japan .

Ah well , time to sort out more suspension stuff and the 4 plug engine management conversion .

Cheers A .

I think for memory that all the headgaskets for the EA82 are the same part no. including turbo

I had a good run out of the monotorque brand gaskets in my EA82T, they lasted 5 years on 16psi only failing a few weeks ago.

After Finke i will get into the rebuild whic will be a rebore as i have a set of oversize pistons and rings sitting here waiting to be used

I thought copper head gaskets were all the go on the EA82T?

The usefulness of copper head gaskets is an urban myth IMO .
The bloody things are useless at sealing coolant and oil and unless everything is perfect not the best chamber cylinder sealing either .
If this was a high boost competition engine the cases would have steps bored into the tops of the cylinder liners and very short copper cylinders made to form a metal to metal seal between the liners and the head faces . Its means you cut the fire rings from whatever gasket you use and these replace them .

Mine is just a roadie and I'm counting on things like the ceramic coated pistons/e valves , oil cooling and a better header and turbo to keep its temperatures reasonable . Oh and a WAIC as well .

I think the golden rule with these EA82's is have flat case/head surfaces good gaskets and don't let them over heat .

Cheers A .

Copper head gaskets are the best if you have the block decked and the heads shaved, otherwise they leak. I got sick of the puddles of oil and used the monotorque. Usually i dont have an engine untouched for long, the need to add bits gets to me easily so i figured the coppers where not needed. However after this rebuild they may get another showing
