Interesting Spider Vortex internal differences .

I was having a look at the engine internals whilst it's clean and ready for assembly . I think the reason my piston rings have to come from Japan is because the Vortex slugs have a system of preventing the oil control scraper rings rails from rotating . There is a small fine pin in the oil ring grove and the gaps in the rails have a small tag which butts up against this pin and prevents them lining up with the pistons oil return slots .
Neither of the other two sets of EA82T pistons on hand have theses pins or style of oil control rings .
My engine builder thinks that horizontally opposed engines probably get a bit of oil drain down to the lower side of each cylinder and if the oil control rails lined up with the returns it could get a little smokey at start up .
Also the old water pump has a pressed impeller where the new one has a cast impeller with one less but longer vanes .
I think people need to be careful with EA81 and 82 water pumps , have to check but the impellers may be smaller on the 81 pump so not a good look if fitted in an 82 by mistake - if that's possible .

Are the EA82 pistons that dont have the small pin from 85-86 and the vortex motor that does have the pins from an 87+
If that is the case, are you aware of gen1 and gen2 EA82s. The difference can be seen from the "EA82" casting stamp on the block and heads

My MPFI NA had those little pins on the oil rings. It was from a '91 wagon... I'll have a look on the NA carbie (89) when i get the chance.
I really think there should be a listing for the L's in here as "Gen 1" (pre 87) and "Gen 2" (post 87) with the year 1987 as a mixed or cross-over year, there are enough different features on these cars in my mind to label them as gen 1 and gen 2...

Yes gen 1 and 2 EA82's makes sense . The Vortex that we got all this stuff from was late 87 so looks like 2G , I was just surprised that the factory rings were not available here ATM .
I believe that the engine cases were slightly different for all turbo and late MPFI as well .
As for the water pump , the one we're using is aftermarket - some Japanese brand that my engine builder knows to be good . Its not actually listed as turbo though I can't find any mention of there being a turbo and N/A EA82 water pumps . Pretty sure its to suit the std V belt pulley flange height .
The head-gaskets are going to be factory for that engine actually that car ID'd by its VIN no .

with the water pump, I bought the turbo version and ended up adjusting the flange position to be same as N/A to suit my V belted engine and cost me an extra ten bucks for the priviledge . The blocks of the turbo and maybe efi are different in regards to the PCV valve on RHS block and aso have a baffled fume plate at the back of the block

Yes we noticed the turbo engine oil/air separator on the back and will be seeing how effective it is . My engine builder has had oil/air separator's made for high rev competition engines (crank windage issues) so if the factory one is marginal I'll use a comp style one .
BTW do the carby and MPFI N/A EA82's have the rear breather system ? All we have is turbo engines/bits so that's all we've seen .

By "rear breather system" i'm presuming you mean the crankcase breather on the top of the block up at the flywheel (which goes down into some plate you were talking about). The MPFI has this but my '88 carbie block does not have a breather there.
Hope that's what you're after.
