Getting access under dash

Hey peeps

I'm ready to put my driving lights on my '92 lib, however my POS haynes manual is crap at giving instructions on removing the dash. I don't want to take the instrument cluster out, just the top panel that sits on top. Will that give me sufficient access to the top of the firewall?

Easy Don't just pull the bottom lower cover off stick your head between the pedals and look up! All you need to do from that side is run the wires into the engine bay and install a switch! Or just plug into the existing wiring if you can!

The last car I re-wired up for external driving lights (Holden Rodeo), I just opened up steering collum surround and look for full beam wiring and used a jointer there with new wire to the switch, from the switch goes to external lights, but before it gets to external lights i used relay from battery to the relay, the wire from the switch is only to activate the relay and uses the main wiring from battery to power up the light, its a better way of doing it.. It was easy.

Sweet as! The RooLites i bought came with a power relay so that's all good. I had two switches included with the lights, but I wanna find one of those 'missle launcher' type cover switches... just because! I'm sure the novelty will wear off eventually, but it'll be fun for a while!

So AP you reckon it's easier to splice the high beam connector near the switch instead of closer to the headlights? I thought closer to the headlights would have been better as it's after the main headlight relay?

Owen, it doesn't matter if the highbeam connector is spliced after the headlight relay or not - it just needs to be enough to trigger the relay to run the driving lights...

As for the missile launcher switch cover, check Jaycar - they might have something for you

Yeah you can, just as long it doesnt overload the wires and melt them (or blow factory fuse) due high current. I thought I had an diagram here but mustn't lost it..

Got it all wired up last night, awesome! Driving to the grampians tonight for the weekend so get to test 'em out! So far the only things i've managed to 'spot' with them was a very starlted possum slinking along the fence behind my garage when I fired them up for the first time.

Ended up being quite the mission with wire colours not matching the haynes manual.. surprise surprise! Pulled the steering wheel off and dismantled the steering wheel mounted controls. Turns out the 'red wire' that was supposed to be the high beam was actually a back/red fatso coming from the bottom corner, ended up being white/blue on the otherside of the connector in the main wiring area - argh! Yay for a multimeter, that's all i can say!

Happy with the wiring routing, all been either hidden into the panelling or tucked into the existing 'pipes', mounted the relay and fuse just above the left headlight, next to the battery. Still deciding about where to mount the switch, for now i've got it emerging next to the gear stick, but we'll see.
