Thermo Fan Problems

Post by SUBA ROO BRUMBY » Wed Jan 05, 2011 2:32 pm

Hi all I have a 1990 subaru Brumby. With A/C which don't work (Needs regassing and change the gas over) But i have two thermo fans on it and one used to work full time and kept the engine temp just on half. now that one is not working untill the other one kicks in after the temp gets around 5/8 on the gauge. or when the aircon button is pushed can any one help on why this is.???

Cheers Brett

Brett,

There is a coolant temp switch, lower drivers side of radiator.

Ignition on, ground the single wire and your first fan should operate.

If so, the switch is faulty.
Regards

Gary ;)

I just hooked both of mine up together threw an ignition power source then threw a toggle switch so they only work while the engine is running or i can flick them off temp never goes above half now

By factory an AC fitted MY or late model brumby will have both fans come on at the same time when the engine hits a certain temp mark, if its anything like my L that'll be at about 91 degrees and cut out at about 87 degrees.

Suba Roo I'd say that some one's stuffed around with your fan setup to have one run all the time. IF the temp was on half with this fan running all the time I'd say that the radiator needs to be looked at. You should be able to cruise around on the open road without a fan running and the temp much lower than half on a warm but not stinking hot day...

It could also be that what ever has been done to run this fan all the time is stuffed or faulty.

I'd also check to see that the temp sender unit in the radiator is good working order as your thermos should kick in at about half temp on the gauge, not 5/8th's.

Also don't rely purely on your instruement cluster's temp gauge - the sender unit could be faulty or read like this from the factory. The best way to gauge the temp of the engine is to have an aftermarket unit fitted that shows some sort of numerical temp mark for some sort of real indication...

Also, I rigged up this circuit for my On/Off/Auto thermo fan switch ;) L series based of course!

I thought the second fan would only ever kick in when AC was being used, learn something new every day it seems.
