Hey Y'all

Just swapped my tail lamps (whole lens and cowling) and when I apply the brake I get a brake lamp warning light on my dash (1983) I checked the lamps (thanks to a broomstick wedged against my seat  ) and they are on and bright..all the other lamps work fine..Any clues?

My first guess is perhaps the globes are a different wattage to what they used to be. Swap the old globes back in and see if it still does it.

It could also be the little unit in the back there that detects stop lamp failure, I don't know much about this though as I've never had to touch one.

Yer go with Tim advice 1st of changing the globe, this should (hopefully) fix the problem. Real basically the ecu will notice a power differance and thus notifies you with the break light on the dash (or some crap close to that).

Cheers

I gather it detects a different voltage drop from what it needs thus thinking a globe it blown..I'll check that tonight..I thought I may have shorted a wire out..

My Brumby does this too. When I apply brakes, I get a very quick flash of the signal light (very quick, didn't even know what was flashing until I looked closer with the car stopped).

I might have to try different wattage globes then. What is stock?

Yeah I'd say it's wrong globes, mine does the same thing with my trailer connected.

Yep seems I had a dodgy globe swapped the around an 'disco' works perfectly.

as for the 'what are the original globes' the shroud shows 12v 8w/27w but i think 5w/24w is what you find at your local shop..

cheers again guys

That's exactly right Kaffine. That momentary flash BVCP and xaymaca wer talking about is totally normal for a Subaru running aftermarket stop/tail globes. Happens in all 3 of my Subarus. It only happens after about 5 seconds or so.

So should be be searching for a carton of 8W/27W globes to distribute amongst us Subie folk?

Why bother? They'd cost twice as much and would involve people having to muck around with their taillights. People like me who have better things to do, like EJ conversions. :D

Seriously, my best guess of where to source them would be Subaru themselves. I doubt Repco or the like would have anything like that (and if they did I'd doubt the nut behind the counter could find them).
