What should i be looking for, recommendations?

for a 98 gx impreza, obd 2?

Found this one so far

I paid $110 for my ODB-II cable and i use ECU Explorer software to read the data on a laptop. Works well and you can Open ECU or other Open source software to have a play.
Works well with diagnosing CEL and gearbox issues.

have you definately got the OBD-2 style connector? Early 98 still had the subaru select connector.

even if you do not all of the OBD-2 commands will be supported in the 98/99 ECUs

i have an odb-II -> usb cable i really dont use anymore (was for my 2001 b4, but im running motec now). It was from tactrix, they have since upgraded to openport 2.0, not sure what the difference is, mine is a 1.2 or 1.3 i think. If you would like to come round and try it out you can (im in subiaco), if it works you can have it for a 6 pack... give us a pm if you want.
