I have an EJ25(SOHC), 5pd manual, no DR, converted Brumby. I cant get the reverse lights to work. Can anyone tell me which of the switches on the gearbox (and I believe it is the rear one on the left hand side), is the reverse switch please?

just connect the switch up to the wires on the car loom and if it lights up in reverse only then its the reverse switch.

sometimes they have nuetral switches or other random shit

Try shorting out the connector on the main loom. If your reverse lights come on, then all is good on the car side and the gearbox switch or wiring is at fault. If your reverse lights don't come on when you short the connector, you have a problem in your loom/fuse/reverse lights somewhere.

To test the gearbox switch, you can use a multimeter or test lamp. Multimeter will read zero ohms (or close to) when in reverse and open circuit (infinite ohms) when in any other position. You can also use a test lamp to test.

Connect (battery pos)-----(12v lamp)-----(gearbox switch)-----battery neg)

Light will go on when in reverse, off in any other position

If it has got 2 switches on the LH side of the box in the transfer case, the reverse light is the most forward one.
The rear is the neutral position switch.

I have this prob on 98 OBW. confirmed the reverse switch on the MT is functioning by accessing the connector in the engine bay. Applying 12V with a wire to the white/red wire has the back-up/reverse lights alight. Checked every fuse in the side panel - all ok. the wire diagram doesn't show a relay....but somewhere the brown/yellow (in the engine bay) must convert to the white/red under the dash (and to the rear)........... f*****in wiring!! how much needs to be pulled apart?

Have you shorted the other side of the connector in the engine bay to check that the lights work?
Apply 12V isn't good enough as you've only checked the output of the connector, not the power supply side.

Some times you need the engine running to check the reverse lights i.e. the oil pressure light gone out. so you may need an assistant for this one, or i normally check them when reversing up to the big reflective mirrors at maccas that and the brake lights.

yes at the connector there is +12V and the Brown/Y wire, so I put a jumper wire on those connector pins (simulate the switch on the MT)
and there is no lights or 12V on the white/red wire to the lamps.

This is NOT the wiring I am seeing (from a pdf '98-2003 liberty)

I need to remove the dash to get at from where the wires pass thru the firewall........i tink thats the only option atm.
hate to think how much a auto-elect would charge to fix this!!
