Hey all

Trying to get my brumby on the road, when we crank the engine it turns very slowly kind of as if the battery is flat

We hooked up another car to it today and jumped it, turned a little quicker then just got sluggish again, earths and positive to the starter are very solid

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas before i go down the path of getting another starter motor.

I starter motor will start stripping teeth and
be noisy when they are on the way out.
They usually stop operating or being effective
suddenly.

Even jumping 2 cars together it can still start
slowely with lower rated leads.
Sounds like battery, check levels in battery if
possible and try a slow trickle charge.

Failing that, replace it.

Batteries generally last for three years but
in saying that, some last less than twelve months
and some last ten years.

Battery is brand new, ive got it charging at the moment but ive tried two different batteries now both do the same thing. Im guessing it is the starter.

cant always be the easy way out lol
at least they are easy to change on subaru's

Brumbys and MY wagons have the same problems.. I find that it's usually due to 2 issues..

1. The ignition key switch has lots of volt drop over time and found the 'Hot Start Relay' solution works 99% of the time.

2. The power cables are crap.. made from aluminium and also become week with age. I found replacing with good quality copper cables and extending the earth cable to as close as possible to the starter does the trick.

After that.. if the problem is still there then I replace the starter (but you can try this first if you have a spare just lying around).

I also test the battery with a Hydrometer (if it's not a sealed battery) to see if the battery is good to start with.

also look at the starter motor.pull it off and strip it down all you need to do is unscrew a few screws dis-assemble it and clean it. if the brush's are worn buy new ones,put it back togeather and bolt it back up.

this is just another suggestion

Brushes in starter motor you can get them for about $20. Give it a good clean up and grease when you put it back together.

Starter crook or check earth. That includes engine earth lead.

I thought the same with earth, so i already replaced the cable still winds slow might see if i can get some brushes and go from there.

Also change the bearings at the same time otherwise its pointless. But check the starter outside of the car with jumper leads and see how well it spins, Be carefull though if its good it will through itself out of your hands!

I've had this exact issue, it was the bush's (not brushes) at each end of the shaft, cost less than $10 and was a fairly simple task to replace them.

Ok.. well it won't hurt to have good cables Have you got a spare starter you can use? or do you need to pull yours apart? if you have to do yours then I'd recommend you grab some new brushes, bushes, high temp grease and some fine sandpaper.. saves you running to the shop later

when we broke the starter in the freinds bush bash car it was the windings that came undone, due to the solenoid not kicking out annd as such it span too fast without a load on it.

I ended up getting a starter from a wrecker, turns easy as now.

It starts as well so thats great, now another problem, cant get it into reverse but every other gear works
