85 Brumby Wiring,

Post by EAS51 » Mon Jan 17, 2011 4:34 pm

Hello all,
I've just bought myself a 1985 Subaru Brumby Ute, It came with all these spot lights and extra lights which i don't need.
The battery had about 8 different wires jacked onto it so i just undid the lot and removed the spotlight wires.
Now i didn't realise but the Spot lights were hocked up to the headlights.
Also the Fan (radiator) is now connected to nothing ?
I don't know which wires go where now. Everything was home done i assume and none of the switches worked for the lights anywhom

Now the car won't even turn onto reds. So obviously i went overboard.
So would someone kindly give me some pictures of where wiring should go with labels of what it is.
Or link me to some kind of manual..
Cheers..

the information is for the EA 81 motor and wiring the first link is to a Factory service manual.

and the second is the whole gregorys manual and if you scroll down in that same post there is a link for the whole collection in one rar file. the parts are there in case some one just wants one piece of the information.

Cheers. The diagrams are going to be exciting to try and read. The manuals don't really tell me much. What about an engine bay picture or something ?
Could someone do that for me ?

you could try reconnect each wire one at a time to see what each powers up. Sotties usually have a circuit to connect to headlights bit not wired in such a way that to disconnect a junction to a spots relay will make any normal lights not work.

Anyway, waht are yor reds ? tails, brakes ??

Will you please post up[ pics of your battery teminals so we may spot what you got , what you not. Factory fan on radiator or after market? Do you have air con in car or air con switch in dash ? Do you have a fixed fan run off water pump? or two elec fans

I'm guessing he means the ignition lights on the dash.. if this is the case, you'll need to go over those diagrams Jules (Toonga) has posted. You'll just need to trace out each one (one at a time) and see whats what. I'd firstly check that you have power from the battery to the fusable link block which is mounted just behind the battery.

OK, IGN reds, while on the subject where does the power for IGN light on actually come from and what causes it to extinguish when running?

I would check the igniton fuse as well, it doesnt take much to burn one out. a loose positive wire touching where it shouldn't even for a second or two will cook the fuse, as it is 10 amp.

Jonno.. going off memory here (as I don't have a WSM with me at work) but I'm pretty sure the Ignition Lights on your dash are wired off the Alternator.

Ok so here are some pictures. A couple are labelled. The others if you need to know where they go please ask. I'll happily source them for you and any help to get this car going again will be much appreciated.

OK, thanks Paul, of course, I am a slow thinker at times. I wonder if the wiring dude pinched power from alternator for all the spotties big mother relay box.
Buddy, seen your pics, now think we need to find out what wires you have coming out rear of the alternator. There is a white plug plastic that has two wires and looks factory, then there should also be the one with stud insulated in the back with a nut 8mm spanner fits with a wire or two goes to battery via the FL fusable link box just near the battery - in MY Brumby it sits tight under the convoluted wiring loom right hand side guard, has three silicone cloth woven insulated wire links in it, red green black ?

I can see what looks like one fixed fan off water pump, the other is electric. From memory electric fan has black and bllue wiring factory ansd triggers from sender in RHS rad tank

I don't understand any of that. I'll say what i think i know.
There is a thick black wire That goes from the Battery Positive to the starter i believe. At the back of the engine on the right hand side (looking at the engine from open bonnet).
There is a black wire that goes from the Battery negative to the alternator i think which is front left hand underneath the air intake There is a black wire from battery negative to i'd say ground on the radiator section.

The blue and black wires for the Fan on the radiator have been cut so they are currently going nowhere. There is a little relay on the radiator part aswell but only the yellow wire is connected. which is actually the Blue from the fan.

There is wires on the coil pack i think lil red cylinder front left behind battery. But again the wires are going nowhere.
And the headlight wires go nowhere.. So confusing.

I'd suggest you look at the manual but failing that, I'd find someone with the same model who lives nearby and ask them (maybe bribe them with some beer) to drive over to your place and park side by side and see if you can make them both look the same.. remember to make yours look like theirs though

Haha i'd rather make theres look like mine. Anywhom the car now runs. I went to the wreckers and got pics and a whole loom. I might of wasted 20 bucks on a loom i didn't use but i don't have to get a auto electrician out now.
All that i really need to do is.
Figure out how to hook a horn up.
And figure out how to hook that front fan up.
And the electrics are done.

My factory fan on the drivers side has 2 wires coming from it, one yellow, the other blue, terminating in a white plastic plug. It then pligs to mating white plastic plug that comes out of the main loom just behind my single headlight on RHS. Hard to see exact wires but yellow and blue are there, maybe a second yellow wire.

Did you find the cause or just a fiddle get it right?

White two pin plug in the back of alternator has fat white wire and thin white with red trace. The fine threaded pole at back of alternator has big fat white wire that usually goes to the fusible link box near battery - three main fuses for the car other than the blade fuse fuse box inside cabin.

Frm your pics I can not see FL box where mine is

What year model is yours?

My battery pos pole has that cable you mention going to starter motor, it also has a thinner factory cable that goes to the FL box on RHS guard just under main loom bundle.

Steptoe, The cars all good now it starts and runs.
For the fan on the inside of the radiator, THe yellow plug has broken off thats why i assume the other fan is on the outside. All i need to do is wire that in somehow.
And he has put in aftermarket horns but they only have one terminal instead of a positive and negative so i'm unsure how to wire that in.

It ended up being a few things wrong, 1 was the coil wires weren't correct and i was missing a few earth wires and the little fuse box behind the batttery wasn't connected to the positive on the battery.
