Im pretty sure the use of retrofitted HID lamps in fittings not designed for them is illegal.

It is because HID lamps produce a different spread of light to filament lamps and the headlight lens must be designed to suit. Glare for oncoming traffic is the main concern

Great they offer a superior white light but as mentioned by Suparoo you will need to adjust the light. Most HID conversions kits come with a a set of 3 globe adjusting screws, once the HID is fitted you adjust the 3 screws so the light spread is the same as the previously fitted globe. This can take some time to adjust of in other cases there is no adjustment required.

I did have the in my Liberty's projector headlights - it was worth it and the light output is unbelievable - in past 2 years since I fitted HIDs = I didnt get flash backs at all because I've aligned the headlights correctly. I did also fit them in normal Liberty headlights and was ok - light output was good, but it did scatter but didnt affect oncoming drivers.
No good for full beam since HIDs needs approx 6-10 seconds to "warm up" to boost full brightness. But you can buy H4 hi and low, (not HID low & halogen High as they're crap due incorrect bulb location)
Cheers

I just put the factory gen3 HID's into the outback, they are pretty good i guess. On the highway, they are so bright that you can barely notice a difference when you put the high beams on!
The factory hid's have a thumbwheel to adjust the angle of the lights from in the cabin.
