How to add an AUX input to your factory Gen3 Headunit

Post by Gannon » Sun Mar 20, 2011 4:02 pm

Like many of you, the factory CD changer in your car begins to wear out and skip on every track, or simply lock up and display "ERROR" on the display.

Half of me wanted to get an aftermarket headunit and just be done with it, the other half liked the way the factory one matches the climate control unit, so a decision could not be made.

Lots of people go with a simple FM transmitter, but i dont like the loss of sound quality that results

So browsing one night, i came across this site.... www.worldpress.com/clarion-aux-input

It makes use of the unused C-Net socket on the rear panel and works with the Clarion PF-1572I single DIN, the Clarion PF-2143I double DIN and the McIntosh PF-2142I from the B4

I bought one of these from www.minikits.com.au for $10.25 inc P&H

This is how to wire it (ignore the 10k resistor, it works fine without it)

This is mine, all soldered up

This is the completed plug, with the headphone plug and switch wire

Testing it in the car (notice how ACCS is displayed on the display

Mounting the switch

Currently using the GPS as an MP3 player, sound quality is as good as the CD player (100 times better than FM)

Now i just have to find a suitable MP3 player that will be easy to use while driving, but i refuse to by anything made by Apple.

Just out of interest, here is a Gen3 with what appears to be a factory fitted GPS and video player/TV

Hi Cannon

I was wondering if you knew the output locations for your head unit. I have searched many articles on the net but all seem to point to the input 13 pin DINs inputs.

I have purchased a PF-21421 recently in Australia. I assume the 14 PIN proprietary Subaru connector on the back of the PF-21421 controls the output and power to the AMP.

Yeah it would be

I have read that only some of the McIntosh units have this input.

Have you got photos of the front and back so I can identify which one you have?

Yeah if I ever came across that fascia, I would have to buy it, no questions asked. It would leave 4 din spaces for audio gear.

Believe it or not, I found that image on a Russian car audio enthusiasts website, but the buttons on the TV unit are in Japanese.

I had 2 of these in 1/2 cuts from Japan. I think it maybe around here somewhere but if you saw my shop then you'd understand the word 'somewhere'

I'll be moving shop in the next few months, so if I find it, it's yours.
