faulty fuel gauge

fuel gauge doesnt work on my 91 l series
every now and then when its full it will go up to 1/4 and back....
i suspect its prob the sender not the gauge?
Is this a common thing?

yeh itll be the sender. P
its common, but uncommon at the same time.
youll have to replace the sender.

Is that something that can be removed easily from a L? Cause I am taking one apart now, and that is one of the few bits left I don't need. No idea if it works, but it could be yours for postage....

If it's a wagon, lift the rear floor cover in the cargo area, you'll see a little plate held in by a screw and some black silicone, remove this plate and you should be able to see the sender unit.
Clean up the area around it. Unscrew the sender and be careful when lifting it out.
Packaging it up for postage could be a bit of fun I'd imagine!
