exactly what does a knock sensor do?

Wow,.. why did it stretch and who is paying for it?

I'm interested. I thought 'they' had all this sorted when 'they' returned to timing chains instead of belts!! I think I recall some engines have a 'timing chain is stretched' sensor ???
Is it a rude question to ask the price of the completed job or is it a bit embarassing ?

It's marginally embarrassing.

The chain on my car is not meant to be replaced so vw place it in a crappy spot which has requires the motor and gbox to be removed for replacement. Therefore labour costs are high. It's costing me $2k. However vw are paying half the labour charge so that brings it down to about $1300.

My warranty ran out 6months ago!

All in all, I got the car 4k less than its worth so I'm still ahead. Just unlucky I suppose.

Stretched!? how can a chain get stretched with tensioners installed? Something arent right!!!

My VW specialists reckon it's marginally common which is why VW recognise the issue and give reimbursement for it.

Maybe the chain isn't stretched but a tensioner is dead? You can hear it slapping about if you listen properly.

Its definately not just a volkswagen thing; I work at a "european car specialist" and have seen a few timing chain jobs come through. Certain bmw's have issues aswell as a few models of the mini coopers (they have alot of issues). Most of the time it's just the tensioners (hydraulic) or guides that crap out as the chains themselves don't really "stretch" so much as the links and rollers in them experience some wear (which can be avoided to an extent by regular servicing); you shouldn't have to worry about this in the lifetime of a modern engine... but it is what it is. $1300 is a pretty fair price for a job like that and at the end of the day you don't really have much choice.

Is this knock sensor still going strong? Was temted to o this route but I needed one pretty quickly so decided to go local. Managed to find a guy on ebay selling OEM (JECS) sensors for $44 shipped. The seller is dirt_devil_racing

Still going strong. I haven't had a check engine light since it was installed and the car drives perfectly.
