Weird electrical problem (brumby)

Post by B00sting » Sun Apr 28, 2013 10:54 am

So car was just serviced, nothing major. The only electrical related thing to be fixed was the headlights, 2 globes were replaced.

Driving home last night, all of a sudden car loses power slowly. As soon as it started happening I couldn't rev the car, dash display was still on at this point. Car dies completely as in stalls.

I try to crank and battery is nearly dead, car turns over super slowly. Had to push it in to a back road to pick up today.

Weird and annoying. Any thoughts before I tackle it?

I'm thinking I could be super unlucky and battery/alternator/coil all died lol?

I have had the same problem, Alternator or positive or negative lead to the battery.

First time the alternator died, the second time the aluminium earth lead had degraded to the point, where it looked fine but was that corroded it would not carry charge.

otherwise I would look at the power lead that goes to the fusible links then the fusible links.

What motor do you have in your brumby?

As the EA81 doesn't have timing belts.

Ok at this stage thinking alternator.
Towed car back and started it with another battery.
As soon as car started disconnected battery and car died instantly.
Just a coincidence that it happened straight after a service lol.

B00sting, a failed alternator should illuminate all the red warning lights under the dash. You can also use a voltmeter to check the volts at the battery. Once started the voltage should increase maybe by a volt. Just check all the connections at the alternator to make sure they are ok.

I have a few spare alternators but I won't be back home til next week if you wanted one on the cheap.

Instant death of engine means the alternator is toast.

Thanks mate, helpful!
Might take you up on an alternator but my mechanic can usually get new ones cheap so i'll ask him first.

Was the alternator. Fitted a new one and no dramas now.
Cheers!
