I figure its about time I figure out exactly what this thing does and why I need it. I'm sure its to do with the ignition, but at the moment Dave and I are trying to trace a power back-feed and I want to know exactly what it does. Specifically the thick white wire leading to the ceramic resistor thingo on the left is getting constant power.
Harness is from a JDM '93 GT wagon, blue in colour

I believe they call that the dropping resistor, its for the ignition...

I'd say it's the electrics for the IC water pump (resistor + 2 relays). I did the same head scratching on the same car.
There was a link to a wiring diagram somewhere on here that might help.

^ Correct.
What is the problem with the wiring?

Here we go:

Good, thanks heaps.
The problem we are having is that when the car is started and then turned off, it keeps running. We've traced it to a voltage back-feed from a white wire, which I'm assuming is the one going to the resistor there.
Time to pull the harness I think.

Do you mean the engine keeps running or the IC pump keeps running?

The engine. The IC pump has been removed, it never found its way into my coupe because I am using a WRX air/air jobbie.

The ignition switch power to the ecu/injectors/coils must be staying on for it to keep running. Just unplug all the relays and toss them, that'll take that out of the picture.
