92 GX Liberty - Bush buggy?

Post by Thumpage44 » Fri Feb 27, 2009 7:54 pm

Hey Guys and Gals.

Ive been trying to sell my 92 Lib for awhile now without much sucess (probably because the paint is crap). So ive been thinking, how hard would it be to strip it down so it weights less than my shoes and then use it for fun on dirt tracks?

I would of course want to keep it road legal because its still drives well and is registered. What would i need to keep? Lights, seatbeals, headrests? Am i able to take the rear body off and leave the rear wheels and fuel tank exposed?

Im not really sure what to ask or where to start... As you may have realised. ;)

If anybody is able to point me in the right direction i would be thankful.

You really can't do any of that if you want it to be road legal.
If you can't sell it, but still want a buggy then you should hand in the licence plates (to get your refund on what rego is remaining) then grab and angle grinder and go to town.
A severely cut down subaru is a severely fun one, I can testify to that, the power/weigh ratio is just awesome. I had a ball in WackyBug even with the original motor in it.
It really helps to have your own car trailer though, otherwise its abit impractical to get it to and from the offroad areas.

Hey andrew,

Im pretty keen to keep it road legal because i have no trailor and incase my other car fails. I'd probably only get around $60 for the remaining rego.

So, theres rear seats,carpets,spare tyre/jack,radio,inside doors,center console,dash?

Common, help me get it under 800kg atleast :P

You could try parting out all the bits you don't want.

I have a lib the same colour so might b interested in a few bits.

Got one of those drill circle cutting tools? Dunno the name of them but they cut a circle of steel out, if you do it in the right places you could end up with a light yet still strong body. They used to do this with old school rally cars from what I've seen.

I once drove my old Diahatsu thru a Maccas drive-thru right after a dude in a Hilux did! ......maybe I should have tried driving it in an offroad baja competition too :)
