EA82 eng mounts to MY... HOW??

Post by steptoe » Sun Apr 26, 2009 1:22 am

I have found to drop an EA82 block with respective engine mounts onto an MY engine cross member the EA82 mounts do not sit flush on the MY cross member. (The holes in cross member had been extended outwards to take up the extra width of mounting studs in mounts)

never read this before in this application, yet EJ has presented a problem somewhere in the past in one model or the other, in which matt Brumberty said or suggested simple twisting of mounts of EA81 or EJ but not the chunky EA82 mounts in my question

what have others done to fix this problem?

wedges ? and that could present the need to wedge the nuts below
or twist distort the EA82 mounts to fit flush?

I do not wanna force the mounts to sit in other than comfy position

ta,

just slot the holes. I think you only have to slot one side. I have do it before to my buggy. it has ea82T motor.
I rather be 4wding in my Subaru buggy MY body with 600mm cut out. EA82T dual range (1.59/1 ) twin hand brakes, welded rear diff, 12.5 wide atv tyres.

thanks BUT, not the answer I was looking for. The holes are slotted but when sitting engine onto the crossmember the mounts do not sit right. Maybe just tightening things up will pull them down but I don't wanna need to replace the things due to unnecessary fatigue and plan to have engineer certificate stating 'good and proper practices used'

c'mon someone has done this fussy fit in thing ??

Well, might as well keep this one going as no one has come in and said I am an idiot. So, I will hold my hand up

I just sat dummy EA82 engine block and mounts on MY cross member (with lengthened slots) and the out of whack was only about four or five millimetres , fitted up a nut and thick headbolt washer and tightened the nut up and pulled mount into place, placing rubber into some stress but I gues it will be acceptable and not noticeable upon engineer inspection.

i think if i was doing it i'd get out the angle grinder and cut a 'u' shape around the part of the crossmember that the mount sits on, bend it to the right angle, and then just weld it back up again.

that's a good idea. Even just a thin wedge plate packer at one end would do, but this way will be a test, and also easy to revert back to an EA81 if the need ever arose.

if you only put a wedge on one side you'd bend the bolt, or at least stress it. then again that's probably what most people have done. As for going back to an EA81, the crossmembers wouldn't be that hard to come by.
