Power Steering Shaft

Post by L-for-leather » Wed Feb 10, 2010 10:13 pm

So I have been 'upgrading' the L for a while now, and looking to get a lift kit from Subiwan but it seems he is offline due to personal reasons.

Anyway, I would like to get the thing moving again so I can get it into my new garage, but one of the things stopping me is the lack of steering shaft. Obv. I would get a custom one with the lift kit but since I fitted a powersteering rack to it, the standard uni shaft no longer fits. In fact its hard to see how a shaft would fit as the two splined ends are so close together.

Is there some other flexible joint that was used with the PS rack that I can get hold of to get me moving again? I will try to get a picture of the gap between the shafts if that would help.

Hoping someone with an encyclopaedic knowledge of subys will tell me exactly what I need (and that they have one out the back shed).

Cheers

Shane

I have an MY not an L, but for power steering the MY also used a smaller universal joint from the steering colum to the rack.

Give Sunspares a ring, with luck they have one they can send to you.

The L series uses a different Uni joint shaft to fit to the steering shaft between the PS and the non PS units. Frustrating I know, but unless you have a PS uni shaft you're not going anywhere until you do. Go to a parts joint like U pull it and grab one from there.

When you order your lift kit make sure you tell dave that its for an L with power steering, otherwise you may end up with the wrong uni shaft and no steering but a lifted L...

Happy hunting.

I got onto Boxer Service and they had the exact one. Should have just done that in the first place!

Thanks for the responses though guys!
