iam pretty sure this has been discussed before but iam not real good at finding stuff so ill bring it up again a carbied ej22 or conversion to carby from efi iam thinking about putting an ej in my subaru, i just saw a picture on this forum of what looked like a brumby with a carbied ej22, i have a bit of mechanical knowledge but not to familair with electrics except for a stereo is this an realalistic option or whould this affect the dollas it cost for the conversion thanks ?????

if you want to read through 59 pages for a giggle as some have, have fun

you will need an escort mk3 dizzy or a fiori dizzy (plus adaptor plate for dizzy) look at this album the last 3 pictures or the elusive dizzy from subaru (I have some rocking horse fecal matter that was easier to come by)

I've found a weber 32/36 works well, a weber ADM34 works but must be jetted very well otherwise you drown motors.

a custom manifold or a single point injection manifold from an EJ18 which will need some customising to get a 32/36 in place.

an adaptor plate unless you go to a AWD box then you will need a custom gearbox crossmember and custom cv shafts.

oh and a custom radiator

99.5% of this is needed for the computer swap over as well (not the dizzy of course)

and mostly you will need patience for the nay sayers that get left in a sand pile on the beach

Thanks but I wouldn't call it completed yet.. still looking in to this adaptor plate for the Fiori dizzy which I feel would work better due to space/room.

As for it working on an EJ20.. well Frank started off being an EJ20 but Jules found a very cheap EJ22 and he felt the EJ20 had head gasket issues (I believe it was other issues) but because all the manifolds can be swapped over then the only issue is setting up the carby with the correct jets. Meaning it could work on any EJ model, the only issue with the other models was the drive at the back of the head for the dizzy, so just remove the small plate at the back of the drivers side head and see if there is a slot cut in to the camshaft? If you're not sure just post up a pic and I'll let you know.

Not all ej20's have the slot in the end of the camshaft for the dizzy drive, would require more custom work to fit a dizzy to these motors.

That's correct.. that's why I post that about the cap at the back of the head. I have also found the the later model (large rocker cover type) EJ20s don't have this cam plate so I'm 99% it wont work on those engines with out a bit of mucking around.

If you would prefer not to muck around with a dizzy.. then have a look at these..

does an ej18 have a dizzy drive?, would the carby fit on the inlet manifold with a bit of customizing seams you can use a ej18 manifold for the carby coversion might be a bit less mucking around.

You'll need to remove the car at the back of the head to check but I'm under the impression that all EJ18s do have the slot.

As for the manifold.. it will depend on where you are trying to fit the carby?? and what model EJ18 manifold you're talking about. IMO the SPFI EJ18 manifold would be the best to use but they are very hard to come by as they weren't available in Aus.
