Looks sweet, but may not be totally legal. Plate has to be visable from an angle, just so that speed camera's can get you. Not sure if WA has speed camera's though.

most speed cameras over here still take a photo of the front, although they are staring to introduce ones that snap the rear 2 get the bikes... from a speed cameras point of view on the side of the road it should get all of it no worries... if not, too bad for them :D

Hey Vidler, any chance you can post some pics of the wheel carrier itself, I am interested to see how it is secured, ie latch or drop pin or something else that can be easily used every day but is strong and sure enough not to rattle or wear out from vibration.
I also want to see just how burly it is in general. seems to me there is a fair amount of leverage working on the attachment point under the car.
I am planning to make one soon, so i am interested in how other people have solved the problem.

im still working on ideas to solve the rattle etc, it does have a lot of leverage off the one point, currently there is just a bolt through the rhs and due to rattling, shaking etc it has worn the hole to a larger size. i have some up with a couple of ideas to eliminate this but yet to apply them.

I used the original mount points of the the recovery points as well as incorporating an existing tow bar, which was secured to the max. Im also yet to put major stress on the recovery points, which im a bit sceptical off considering the amount of leverage and twist they will be exposed too, but im confident nothing will break or snap coz the main bar is made of 50x50x5mm rhs.

i couldnt find a decent latch so i made a giant wing nut kinda thing... bit of a piss off when loading the shopping etc but ill be working on that too.

the best suggestion i could give you is to strengthen the actual bumper and mount it off that. You'll keep your exit angle and have less leverage force on the whole set up coz u wont have to go up and around the bumper...

heres a few pics

Interesting.
I was hoping you had a good idea for the latch that I could steal.
I am thinking a spring loaded pin into a bush.
there also certainly needs to be a bush in the hinge.
I like the idea of mounting it off the bumper too.
 hmm, now I feel motivated to draw up some plans...

cheers!

my wheel carrier is bumper replacement .It mounts off the original bumper mounts in the body also to the tow hook points and i put a plate in the tool compartment and which bolted thru anti crush tubes to the outside bar .it is also a 50mm towbar mount. the only area for improvement is the carrier arm which is slowly ovalising the the mount hole.Vidler what are you using to secure the carrier arms?
Oh yeah the latch i am using is one of those quick release ones you see on camper trailers it seems to be holding up fine.

it pivots on a bolt... when it is closed, the arm is supported by sitting on a bit of flat bar directly under the wheel, so when closed, there is as little pressure as possible on the bolt

If only I can load photos of the bits I have made would drive you mad !

but you will see it one day ( this ones on my jeep ) < yes I have a jeep as well !

Then I can show you how to brace it right .
